Kunsthof-Passage: Dresden « 31 Jul Click to enlarge Tucked away in a student district of Dresden, Germany, you’ll find Kunsthof-Passage, a series of buildings and courtyards that encompass a farm collective as well as shops and cafés. Walking through these buildings into the courtyards leads to a fun surprise: the Court of Water. Using the gutters, metal pipes and funnels, architect Heike Bottcher designed a Rube Goldberg-type contraption that plays “music” when the rain comes down and through. Though this installation is probably the most fun, there are other artistic façades in Kunsthof-Passage including the Court of Mythical Creatures and the Court of Metamorphosis. The whole thing screams fun artist community and seems to be well worth a visit if you find yourself in town.

The new timber-clad house is screened behind the existing building and has two storeys above ground as well as one below. One side of the house is recessed at the back, creating a terrace that is framed by exposed structural columns. Designer Worapong Manupipatpong has created an installation attached to an existing column of the Bangkok Art and Culture Center that resembles, and functions like, a tree house. (Click the images below for full sized images) Halfway between furniture and architecture, Manupipatpong's installation is part of the Politics of Me exhibition at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC), Thailand on now until August 2012. Back The industrial character of the Zabłocie district goes much further back than the mid-19th century. It was here that many factories and industrial plants were situated, including a construction and building materials factory, Oskar Schindler’s enamelware factory and the building of the Telpod factory from the times of the Polish People’s Republic, seeming to stretch into infinity.
Currently, Zabłocie is going through a revival, and the Museum of Contemporary Art located here attracts Kraków’s creative community. It is precisely in this setting, in a building of a former cable factory, that the head office of the Pride and Glory Interactive agency is situated. The surface area of 800 m2 comprises mainly open spaces, but several conference rooms have also been included. From Paul Bernier Architecte: Located near Bromont, Québec (Canada) and surrounded by woods, this house is set in a natural clearing atop a rocky outcrop. The site offers beautiful views of the forest. In winter, when the leaves have fallen, the Appalachian Mountains are visible in the distance. This project, a weekend getaway for a couple living in Montreal, set out to provide a serene, light-filled and timeless space that would be sensitive to its natural setting. The house is made up of 2 volumes, a day block and a night block. The day block is a U-shaped volume set on a plateau at the top of the outcrop. It houses the shared living spaces, including the kitchen, the dining room, the living room and a reading nook, which is tucked behind the fireplace.
The night block, which includes the master bedroom, consists of a 2-storey stone block that extends over the slope. These 2 volumes are connected by a veranda and a fully glazed passageway. Wakefield Street Townhouses by Piercy & Company. These London townhouses by architects Piercy & Company have chunky banisters formed from thickly layered birch plywood. The stairs zigzag up from the basement floor to the second floor roof terraces of each of the three residences, which are located behind a listed wall within the conservation area of Bloomsbury.
The two-storey-high facades of each house are constructed from a sandy-coloured brick that is lighter in colour than the brown and red brickwork of the surrounding historic buildings. The heights of the buildings intentionally line up with their neighbours, while window sills and lintels have been designed with matching proportions.
Perforated steel louvers shade the windows and skylights bring daylight into each house from above. Other projects with interesting staircases include an empty tower and an Olympic Museum.
