Why time management is ruining our lives. The eternal human struggle to live meaningfully in the face of inevitable death entered its newest phase one Monday in the summer of 2007, when employees of Google gathered to hear a talk by a writer and self-avowed geek named Merlin Mann.

Why time management is ruining our lives

Their biggest professional problem was email, the digital blight that was colonising more and more of their hours, squeezing out time for more important work, or for having a life. And Mann, a rising star of the “personal productivity” movement, seemed like he might have found the answer. He called his system “Inbox Zero”, and the basic idea was simple enough. Most of us get into bad habits with email: we check our messages every few minutes, read them and feel vaguely stressed about them, but take little or no action, so they pile up into an even more stress-inducing heap. Instead, Mann advised his audience that day at Google’s Silicon Valley campus, every time you visit your inbox, you should systematically “process to zero”.

It isn’t quite We Need to Talk About Donald, but Lionel Shriver’s satirical dystopia, The Mandibles (Harper Collins £16.99), paints a chilling and timely portrait of the death of the American dream.

Its befuddled yet charismatic president isn’t Trump, and the wall built on the Mexican border is to stop hungry Americans crossing to their richer southern neighbour, but this is nonetheless a caustic and prescient leap into the not-so-distant future. I can’t remember a year in which so many first-rate novels have been published after Man Booker cut-off time in October. There’s Ali Smith’s Autumn (Penguin £16.99), for one, which carries out a real-time appraisal of the events of 2016, her exquisite prose seemingly writing itself as you read it. He was suffering from bipolar disorder and needed time to get treatment. A year and a half later, Kyle was healthy enough to return to his studies at a different university. Around that time, he learned from a friend about a part-time job. It was just a minimum-wage job at a Kroger supermarket, but it seemed like a sure thing. His friend, who was leaving the job, could vouch for him. But Kyle didn’t get called in for an interview. Under the hood: discover 13 hidden iPad features. 1.

Julian Barnes I recently reread Anita Brookner’s first novel A Start in Life (Penguin), and it left me thinking that maybe all novelists should be forbidden from publishing until they are 53; that way they would already have a finished style and a mature, cogent, individual view of the world.

The Open University at 45: What can we learn from Britain's distance education pioneer? Forty-five years ago, when Britain’s Open University (OU) began broadcasting its first lectures over BBC television and radio, there were many reasons to discount its importance. For one thing, the concept of providing higher education at a distance wasn’t new: the first correspondence course, teaching shorthand, was offered in the 1700s; the University of London began offering distance-learning degrees to students around the world in the mid-19th century.

For another, would-be reformers had a long history of over-promising and under-delivering when it came to educational technology; as far back as 1922, for example, Thomas Edison declared that “the motion picture is destined to revolutionize our educational system.” Little wonder, perhaps, that the OU’s radically democratic experiment in open access education was greeted with widespread hostility by many commentators inside and outside Britain’s traditional class-bound universities. Yet somehow the OU quickly put itself on the map. 20 of the best iPhone and iPad apps and games this month. In March the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) revised down its growth estimates for each of the next five years. The chancellor was quick to blame a weakening world economy but the true driver lies closer to home.

The problem isn’t a loud global economic crash but something much quieter: engine trouble. Productivity growth, the long-term motor of rising living standards, is slowing. The fact that this appears to be happening across the globe offers scant consolation. How to add a second screen to your PC or laptop - How-To.
