It was the thinnest laptop ever produced by Apple but its portability came at a price. The 1.6 GHz processor was slower than other Apple laptops on the market at the time and its 2GB RAM couldn’t be upgraded. It also had a slower, smaller hard disk (80 GB), no optical drive, no audio line in, no firewire, no ethernet port and only one USB port. The first MacBook Air did have a full size keyboard and a large screen as well as a trackpad with multi-touch gesture support. To make up for its lack of connectivity and inferior hardware, Apple offered several accessories such as micro-DVI adaptors, a USB modem, a USB-Ethernet converter and an external SuperDrive.

It was also possible to upgrade the processor to 1.8 GHz. The next generation of MacBook Air appeared in October 2008 and, rather surprisingly, Apple persisted with the same 1.6 GHz processor as standard. This Mid-2009 model was superceded in October 2010. The main selling point however was the fact that this first MacBook Pro came with a dual-core processor.
