First Day of School Activities for Big Kids

I know, I know! It's much too soon...but the fact is that it's coming. In fact, a district a few miles away from me starts school THIS FRIDAY! Throughout the summer, I have been compiling some brilliant first day of school activities from around the blogosphere. I always feel like I hear about the great activities too late--it's either a day or two before school starts or I hear about them AFTER school starts. I highly encourage you to click on each picture or the link below the picture to visit the blog post with more details! Six Good Places to Find Free Music and Sound Effects. In my post earlier today about tools for creating book trailer videos I mentioned a couple of sources of free sound effects and music.

Six Good Places to Find Free Music and Sound Effects

Royalty Free Music charges the general public for their downloads, but students and teachers can download quite a bit of the music for free. To access the free music tracks students and teachers should visit the education page on Royalty Free Music. When presented with new material, standards, and complicated topics, we need to be focused and calm as we approach our assignments.

Energy and Calm: Brain Breaks and Focused-Attention Practices

We can use brain breaks and focused-attention practices to positively impact our emotional states and learning. They refocus our neural circuitry with either stimulating or quieting practices that generate increased activity in the prefrontal cortex, where problem solving and emotional regulation occur. Brain Breaks A brain break is a short period of time when we change up the dull routine of incoming information that arrives via predictable, tedious, well-worn roadways. Our brains are wired for novelty. #1 Educational Site for Pre-K through 5. Free Teacher Resources, Classroom Activities and Games. Ms. Sepp's Counselor Corner: Teamwork: Cup Stack. I stumbled across this idea on Pinterest and thought it would be perfect for my third and fourth graders!

Ms. Sepp's Counselor Corner: Teamwork: Cup Stack

I often hear complaints from students that although others "allow" them to play games at recess, they often do not "include" them in the game. For example, in football they are on the team but the ball is never passed to them. I used this as a springboard for discussion on what teamwork really looks like. The Cup Stack is a great activity to facilitate teamwork. Some groups are able to complete the task very quickly while other groups must keep trying and trying to complete the task successfully. The challenge is for the group to build a pyramid out of the paper cups (3 on the bottom, 2 in the middle, 1 on the top - can be adjusted for more cups).

Some groups took 2 minutes to accomplish their goal, some 10 minutes, and some never successfully built their tower. Subject Cover Pages - Classroom Doodles.
