8 Myths That Undermine Educational Effectiveness

This is the subject of 50 Myths & Lies That Threaten America’s Public Schools: The Real Crisis in Education, a new book by David Berliner and Gene Glass, two of the country’s most highly respected educational researchers. Although the book deserves to be read in its entirety, I want to focus on eight of the myths that I think are relevant to most teachers, administrators, and parents. Myth #1: Teachers Are the Most Important Influence on a Child’s Education Of course teachers are extremely important. Good teachers make a significant difference in achievement.

Myth #2: Homework Boosts Achievement. This Test Does Not Define You. 10 ways YouTube can engage your classes now. YouTube can help teachers and students create powerful, engaging, creative videos.

Curing the Reading GERM by Jim Bailey

I loved my school, I loved my principal, I loved my colleagues, and most of all I loved my students. Unfortunately, I was infected with a GERM, as Pasi Sahlberg calls it, the Global Education Reform Movement. The obsession with high stakes testing, lack of autonomy in the classroom, and general standardization of education was forcing me to reevaluate my career path. I was most affected by this GERM in the area of teaching reading, if you could even call what I was doing teaching reading. I’ve Got Research. Yes, I Do. I’ve Got Research. How About You? In 1847, Hungarian doctor, Ignaz Semmelweis made a remarkable discovery.

I’ve Got Research. Yes, I Do. I’ve Got Research. How About You?

When doctors washed their hands in a solution of chlorine and water, childbirth fever rates at Vienna General Hospital dropped from 18% to near zero. Offended that Semmelweis implied doctors were killing their own patients, the medical community rejected hand washing as an infection prevention measure, and drove Semmelweis out of medicine and into an insane asylum. A few years later, Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister made scientific advances that reinforced Semmelwies’s claims about germ theory and infection. Hand washing between patient examinations is considered best practice today. In spite of all scientific evidence, we still live in a world where hand washing isn’t universal practice. Twitter Tip: Start Your Tweet with a Period

I was participating in the New Teacher to Twitter (#nt2t) chat. A twitter chat is an hour long conversation on a particular topic. This means that I am replying quite a bit. When you reply to a tweet it starts the tweet with the @symbol. Twitter assumes that when you are replying that you are talking to that person and not all of your followers. 6 ways Google Hangouts can make any teacher’s life better

I’m thinking about the one I’ve picked up that’s made the most difference. It has to be Google Hangouts, Google’s “video chat but so much more” tool. Google Hangouts often makes me think of the movie “Back to the Future 2″, where protagonist Marty McFly travels — coincidentally — to the far-off year 2015. One of the greatest innovations in the movie’s vision of the future, to a 9-year-old version of me, was the video phone. #BFCTLAP Welcome Message.

The aim of the game is to guess the location of the other classroom by asking each other questions. It has totally transformed the way students learn about the world in my school. Not only does it engage students, but it excites teachers to teach a topic that has long been a short sharp look through an atlas and a glossed over part of the curriculum. It is also an excellent way to integrate technology into your classroom programme and Google Maps is the perfect tool for the job!

By: Kennedy Schultz Helping kids learn about the world can be an exciting adventure for both adults and kids. When I teach about the chateaux of the Loire Valley in France or ancient Mayan sites in Mexico, I’m always looking for kid-friendly resources that can provide accurate information and engaging authentic pictures that hold the attention of little ones.

Virtual Field Trips Since my field trip budget is pretty limited, I especially love websites that offer virtual tours and live webcams to show kids what it REALLY looks like in another world location. Many famous museums such as the Louvre offer 360 degree tours of their collections. Awe. 10 Expectations. Genius Hour.
