Transboundary and Emerging Diseases. Promoting the ‘One Health’ concept, the ‘Joint Conference on Emerging and Re-emerging Epidemics Affecting Global Health 2012’, held in September 2012 in Palazzo del Popolo (Centro Congressi), Orvieto, Italy, quested for expanding inter-disciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care.

Transboundary and Emerging Diseases

The goal of the congress was to review current disease knowledge and provide information needed for the improvement of an effective management of emerging infectious diseases. The conference was attended by over 200 participants from 44 countries, and it successfully combined the activities of the Society for Tropical Veterinary Medicine (STVM), the Societa Italian Virologia (SIV) and the EU-funded consortia ArboZoonet, PiroVac, CCHfever and Postick. This supplement to Transboundary and Emerging Diseases presents the major topics discussed during the conference. Eurosurveillance. EpiH - Epidemiology and Health. Journal of Veterinary Epidemiology. Heartland virus (HRTV) is a recently described phlebovirus initially isolated in 2009 from 2 humans who had leukopenia and thrombocytopenia.

Serologic assessment of domestic and wild animal populations near the residence of 1 of these persons showed high exposure rates to raccoons, white-tailed deer, and horses. To our knowledge, no laboratory-based assessments of viremic potential of animals infected with HRTV have been performed. We experimentally inoculated several vertebrates (raccoons, goats, chickens, rabbits, hamsters, C57BL/6 mice, and interferon-α/β/γ receptor–deficient [Ag129]) mice with this virus.

All animals showed immune responses against HRTV after primary or secondary exposure. However, neutralizing antibody responses were limited. MMWR Weekly. International Journal of Epidemiology.
