DAGON UNIVERSITY RESEARCH JOURNAL - 2012 - Comparison of Cysticercosis Infection of Tapeworm among Inspected and Non-Inspected Porcine Grou. November 18, 2019 Journal article Open Access Kyi Kyi Shein A total of 45 domestic pigs (inspected) from Ywathargyi farm slaughter house, South Dagon Township and 34 from meat markets ( non-inspected ) were examined histopathologically.
The study period lasted from 2004 to 2005. Am. J. Trop. Med. Hyg., 65(1), 2001, pp. 15–18 PROTECTION OF PIGS WITH CYSTICERCOSIS FROM FURTHER INFECTIONS AFTER TREATMENT WITH OXFENDAZOLE. EUREKALERT 16/01/20 Study gauges efficacy of drugs against pork tapeworm. Taenia solium--also called pork tapeworm--is a parasite which causes disease around the world, particularly in very poor communities with deficient santiation and where pigs roam free.
Researchers have now analyzed the efficacy and adverse effects of three chemotherapeutics against T. solium and report their results in a review published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. In its adult form, T. solium causes an intestinal infection known as taeniasis. Humans can become infected with taeniasis when they eat raw or undercooked, infected pork that contains T. solium larvae. A cysticerci form of disease can also develop when humans or pigs ingest the tapeworm eggs; this form can lead to muscle and central nervous system symptoms including seizures (epilepsy if they are recurrent). In endemic countries, T. solium can be responsible for approximately 30% of epilepsy cases.

Parasites & Vectors 12/02/19 A quantitative risk assessment for human Taenia solium exposure from home slaughtered pigs in European countries. We have built a quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA) model for T. solium from pork production to consumption and implemented published data about the porcine cysticercosis prevalence, home slaughter numbers, the distribution of cysticerci in pork cuts and consumption quantities of pork.
Parasites & Vectors 29/11/18 Porcine cysticercosis (Taenia solium and Taenia asiatica): mapping occurrence and areas potentially at risk in East and Southeast Asia. On a national level, of the 16 countries covering East and Southeast Asia, eight were found to have confirmed reports of T. solium porcine cysticercosis and only Laos had confirmed reports of pigs being infected with T. asiatica during the study period.
Discrepancy in reports of T. solium porcine cysticercosis and reports of infections in humans occurred as only human infections were observed for three countries (North Korea, Philippines and Thailand). This is most likely a consequence of epidemiological surveys in pigs not having been performed. The results of this study also underlined the discrepancy between the known distribution of pigs infected with T. asiatica, which were only reported from one province in Laos, and human T. asiatica taeniosis cases, which were reported from an additional six countries. 1. Background Taeniasis/cysticercosis is a neglected parasitic disease caused by the adult or larval stage of cestodes in the genus Taenia. In Southeast Asia, T. solium, T. saginata and T. asiatica causes taeniasis (intestinal tapeworm infection) in humans while T. solium, T. asciatica and T. hydatigena causes cysticercosis in pigs (Conlan et al., 2011). Despite having been declared a potentially eradicable disease in 1992 (Schantz et al., 1993), it remains highly prevalent and a major public health and economic concern in many developing countries in Asia, Africa, and South America (Sarti et al., 1992).
An important example of a One Health disease, taeniasis/cysticercosis transmission is dependent on human and animal hosts as well as environmental contamination and socioeconomic factors such as livestock husbandry practices, socioeconomic status, housing conditions, hygiene and eating habits. BMC 05/10/14 Prevalence of porcine cysticercosis in the Lake Kyoga Basin, Uganda. In Uganda pig farming is an increasingly popular source of livelihoods and the population of pigs has increased from 1.7 million in 2003 to 3.2 million 2009 ,.
There is a deliberate effort by the government of Uganda to encourage pig farming in poor rural communities throughPrograms like National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS; www.naads.or.ug). The popularity of pig farming is partially due to the ability of farmers to keep pigs under minimal input systems, allowing pigs to range freely, thereby exploiting the scavenging nature of the animals to feed them cheaply. Despite the economic opportunities which these low-input systems provide, pigs that are kept under a free range system are at high risk of acquiring a range of diseases. Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine Volume 9, Issue 1, January 2016, Evaluation of activity of triclabendazole against Taenia solium metacestode in naturally infected pigs. Abstract Objective To assess the efficacy of triclabendazole (TCBZ) in porcine cysticercosis.
Methods Eighteen naturally infected cysticercosis pigs were divided into 3 groups of 6 individuals each. The first group was treated orally with TCBZ at a single dose of 30 mg/kg of body weight, the second group was treated orally with oxfendazole at a single dose of 30 mg/kg of body weight and the third group received a placebo (control group).
Results All pigs treated with oxfendazole had only degenerated cysts in their carcasses. Conclusions.
