When it debuted December 1993, it cemented the appeal of the first-person shooter computer game and spawned a genre that is now a multibillion-dollar business. John Romero, who still has rock star-length hair, was a big part of its success as a co-founder of id Software, the Dallas-area company that is now owned by Bethesda Softworks. Henry Lowood, a professor at Stanford University, said that it gets credit for so many innovations — from multiplayer play to modding — that Doom should be known as the “beginning of the modern digital game.”

While it wasn't the first shooter, it was inarguably one of the most influential, kicking off a new tradition both of complexity of gameplay — and of highly stylized, graphic violence. "We fully expect to be the number one cause of decreased productivity in businesses around the world," boasted an id press release ahead of the game's release. It's fair to say "Doom" created something like that level of distraction in homes and offices alike. Those old enough may remember getting the shareware version of "Doom," (subtitled "Knee Deep in the Dead") which ran on DOS, on a stack of floppy disks or downloading it via modem from a local bulletin board system. What awaited players inside that 2-megabyte package would totally eclipse the experience they'd had in other first-person games like "Battlezone" and id's own "Wolfenstein 3D.

Usually you have to wait 1 year or so to get it over here, besides, in 1993 I was 10 years old, so it was a little difficult to get that game for me. I discovered Doom when I was about 14 when I visited a friend of mine whose older brother was studying in college and owned a 486 PC, so we boot up Doom and was like "Oh my God", also we played a lot Test Drive 3 (TD3), Retaliator (Combat Airship simulator), and a year after that, Warcraft 1. Maybe a little off topic but my best memories about gaming childhood comes from Quake 1 and Heretic. We Play Doom With John Romero. While it wasn’t the first first-person shooter out there, it was certainly one of the earliest hits of the genre, due in no small part to its revolutionary multiplayer. People at ID Software had already been deathmatching in Doom1 at this point, and a number of the players began to do so as well. Several doom related USENET newsgroups came into existence. The AOL chatroom "Doomroom" chat room came into use, and was disbanded after EFnet IRC #Doom came into being. The typical way for players to connect and play was modem-to-modem. John Romero was known to be a regular in the deathmatch scene at this time.

Old School: October, 1994 - November, 1996 On October 10th, 1994, Doom2 was released. The EFnet IRC network was being used for primarily US players to chat. //ROME.RO - 1993: DOOM. Anyway, one day in 1995 a cassette tape arrived at the offices and, as usual, I got it since I was very much the person who was talking with a lot of these people (along with Jay Wilbur who did most of the talking, btw!) We got this tape from a guy named Manny Charleton and the tape was created by the Manny Charlton Band. Manny Charlton was the original guitarist of the legendary group Nazareth. Whoa. I popped the tape in my tape player and was expecting to hear something less than awesome.... but instead, this song just ROCKED from the start! It's a little over 5 minutes long, but man it was the coolest thing we had sent to us. Here is the MP3 I made of the song.
