The next food revolution

Can a small bit of nutrition education make a big difference? Activist chef and 2010 TED Prize winner Jamie Oliver thinks so. (Watch his talk, Teach every child about food.) His TED Prize wish was to help kids understand where food comes from, how to cook it, and how it affects their body – and to support better nutrition education for all, Oliver created the Food Revolution.

Below, Oliver’s current thoughts on the future of food. By 2040, even fast food will contain a much bigger rainbow of fruits and veggies. Christopher "moot" Poole": The case for anonymity online. What genetic engineering and organic farming have in common

After all, how could one agricultural practice that eschews any influence other than Nature coexist with another that is cultivated in a lab? Well, in the household of Pam Ronald (TED Talk: The case for engineering our food) and Raoul Adamchak, they live together up close and personally, as the genetic scientist and organic farmer are married. Recently, the couple discussed the complexity of modern agriculture, what they see as common misconceptions of genetically engineered crops — and the implications these have on those who need food the most.

Here’s their take on this hot topic. The problem with genetic engineering is the communication. Much of the communication around genetic engineering is driven by marketing, not science. All genetically engineered crops are not created equal. As a culture, we’ve become far removed from the reality of farming. Farmers need to take a more public stance. 4 ways to use YouTube in the language classroom

I’m really delighted to have been included in this month’s nominations, so… make me a super happy boy by clicking here and voting for me! When it comes their language learning I can safely say that my teenage students always enjoy the multimedia experience.Rather than studying grammar and vocabulary through boring old course books, they find it more exciting to watch action unfold via moving images on their laptop, tablet or smart phone.

What’s great about this is that it’s not just a one-way deal: video clips offer us as teachers the basis for the development of many language skills. I’m an avid user of short clips in my classrooms. Not only does the use of YouTube echo the everyday habits and actions of the teens I teach, this resource is also a goldmine of clips that fit just about any language teaching scenario you could think of. 1. 2. 100 Mostly Small But Expressive Interjections

Cecily Some of these interjections are quite culturally and age specific, so if people need to be told what they mean, they should probably not be using them. For example, to many Brits, va-va-voom is not old-fashioned at all, but instead is firmly linked to the long-running ads that footballer Thierry Henry made for the Renault Clio.
