Lifehacks. Free. Computerscience. Fiction. Giallo. The Turn of the Screw. The Turn of the Screw, originally published in 1898, is a gothic ghost story novella written by Henry James. Due to its original content, the novella became a favourite text of academics who subscribe to New Criticism. The novella has had differing interpretations, often mutually exclusive. Many critics have tried to determine the exact nature of the evil hinted at by the story. However, others have argued that the true brilliance of the novella comes with its ability to create an intimate confusion and suspense for the reader.

Shelfari has always been a place where people come together to talk about their books. A place where you can show off your virtual bookshelf and where communities form around your favorite books and authors. It’s no surprise to us that you can learn a lot about someone by seeing what’s on his or her bookshelf.

Which is why we thought it would be fun to take a look at what’s on the bookshelves of some of our favorite authors. What books do they love, or consider to have been particularly enlightening, informative or just plain fun? So we asked one of our all-time favorites, Neil Gaiman, if he’d be willing to give us a peek into his personal library, and he graciously agreed. Gaiman first gained wide acclaim with his complex and literate 75-issue comic series The Sandman, and has since broadened his scope to write award-winning and bestselling novels (American Gods, Anansi Boys), screenplays (“Beowulf”) and yes, he still continues to write comics. A widely-read paper from 1991 introduced the world to the phrase and philosophy called Worse is Better, and says that this philosophy should be used for the design of the next Lisp. What does that mean, and what parts of the argument still apply and should guide us? Richard Gabriel and Worse is Better Richard P. He has written extensively about the process by which new technological ideas move to the marketplace. His first essay on this topic is called Lisp: Good News, Bad News, How to Win Big, originally published in 1989. The part that got the widest attention was Section 2.1, “The Rise of Worse is Better.” It characterizes a school of design which Gabriel attributes to MIT and Stanford and calls “the right thing”. His account is basically right. What does this mean for the future of Lisp?

[T]heir combined labors killed 250,000 [sic] people in 24 hours and destroyed all of Dresden — possibly the world’s most beautiful city. But not me. After that we were put to work carrying corpses from Air-Raid shelters; women, children, old men; dead from concussion, fire or suffocation. Civilians cursed us and threw rocks as we carried bodies to huge funeral pyres in the city. Although the young private overstated the number killed during the bombings — current estimates run between 25,000 and 40,00 — his correspondence, reproduced in its original form, is the most fascinating document in Vonnegut’s new posthumous collection, “Armageddon in Retrospect.” The letter — both its candor and its smart-alecky tone — helps us understand how a Midwestern ne’er-do-well became the foremost literary pacifist of the 20th century.

The below was written several years ago, so it’s worded like Ivy Leaguer pompous-ass prose, but the results are substantial. By Tim O'Reilly In The Meaning of Culture , John Cowper Powys makes the point that the difference between education and culture is that culture is the incorporation of music, art, literature, and philosophy not just into your library or your CV but into who you are. He talks too about the interplay of culture and life, the way that what we read can enrich what we experience, and what we experience can enrich what we read.

To make his point, I always like to cite an experience I had when I was fourteen and had just read The Golden Warrior , Hope Muntz's classic novel of Harold, last of the Saxon kings. Harold's story fired my imagination, particularly the idea of the compact between a leader and his people, the compact that led Harold to march south to face William the Conqueror at Hastings, despite having just repelled an invasion by his half brother Tostig and his Viking allies up in Yorkshire. So there, I've told you about two books that made a huge impression on me. 10 Spectacular second novels - Times Online. JavaScript: The Definitive Guide. Discovering a Lost Genre: Safari Stories. The Guardian is publishing lists of novels everyone should read, and here are their science fiction/fantasy selections: As many people have already pointed out, many of these titles are not SFF. But what the heck, right!?! Every time lists like this one appear, I realize that I'm not as well-read as I'd like. In addition, I realize that many books that critics adore put me right to sleep and were a waste of my time.
