In Just 45 Seconds, This App Can Help Parents Diagnose Developmental Disorders in Children

A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that by 2025, every second child born, will be autistic and every sixth child will face developmental problems. Despite these figures however, developmental issues tend to remain unaddressed and are still largely misunderstood. How Face Masks, Art and Theatre Are Helping Autistic Children. Read how a theatre specialist is using face masks to help autistic children overcome the challenges of making eye contact, focusing and concentrating.

How Face Masks, Art and Theatre Are Helping Autistic Children

When Parasuram Ramamoorthy, a theatre specialist, heard the word autism for the first time, he misheard it as ‘artism’. That was happenstance with a purpose, because from then on art has been changing the lives of many children with autism. Neurologists across the world are trying to solve the three biggest challenges of autism – the inability of autistic children to make eye contact, their short attention span and their lack of empathy. These seemingly insurmountable challenges have been surpassed not by any medical miracle but a simple tool used in traditional Indian theatre – the face mask.

Increasing Access to Broadway: The Theatre Development Fund Makes Music and Dance Available to All

Can you provide background on the history of the Theatre Development Fund? Theatre Development Fund (TDF) was created in 1968 in the conviction that the live theatrical arts afford a unique expression of the human condition that must be sustained and nurtured. TDF acts on this conviction by making it possible for people who could not otherwise attend the theatre to do so.

Over the past 44 years, we have enabled more than 80 million admissions, and in so doing, have returned more than $2 billion to thousands of theatre and dance productions. In an era of diminishing cultural participation, we are actively engaged in researching and building audience development programs which will help ensure audiences for the live theatrical arts for generations to come. After joining a local YMCA, Dick began running – small distances at first and then, eventually several miles. Within a year, Dick became the first amputee to run the New York City Marathon. The experience was life changing, bringing a powerful sense of achievement and self-esteem. In 1983, seeking to provide that same opportunity to other people with disabilities, Dick created the Achilles Track Club, now called Achilles International.

Today, this non-profit organization has chapters and members in over 65 locations within the United States and abroad. Over the years, Achilles has also developed specialized programs for children and war veterans. While our programs focus on athletics, the truth is, sports are simply the tool for accomplishing our main objective: to bring hope, inspiration and the joys of achievement to people with disabilities. It is just after 11pm at the Senat bar in the roughshod district of Ndjili in Kinshasa, half an hour's bone-jarring drive straight from the clammy hell that is the international airport. The bar comprises a roughly 12-metre square outdoor space with plastic chairs and tables on the dirt floor, a string of lights hung up and above a tree, and then what is the stage – a level surface three-quarters covered by a tin roof, and then a second tree that looks like it has erupted through its left-hand end; three coloured lights decorate the set – yellow, blue and red – but it is also harshly illuminated on this starless evening by the lights of a French film-maker.
