US Congress Reviews Plan to Cut Education Budget. President Donald Trump’s first budget proposes a 13 percent cut in federal spending on education. But like most budget proposals, the United States Congress is sure to make changes. Tom Cole of Oklahoma is a member of the House of Representatives. He heads the House subcommittee that oversees federal spending on education. Cole belongs to the Republican Party, just like Trump. Cole noted proposals to cut programs that provide part-time jobs for college students and help students from poor families attend college.

“Frankly, I will advise you, I have a different point of view,” Cole told DeVos. Thinking of taxpayers Mick Mulvaney is director of the Office of Management and Budget. “This is I think the first time in a long time that an administration has written a budget through the eyes of the people who are actually paying the taxes,” Mulvaney said.

As the rickety bus barely rounded another corner, an audible gasp went through the passengers. A recent blizzard had taken out the road between the high Himalayan villages of Ranipauwa and Jharkot, leaving some 800 meters of mountainous mudslides between us and the first of many 1,000-foot cliffs all the way down to the Kali Gandaki River Valley below. A few feet on our right were the steep walls of Nepal’s Annapurna mountain range, soaring up to heights of 8,000 meters or more. To our left was a sheer vertical drop that began less than a foot away from the trundling wheels of our makeshift vehicle as we wound our way precariously along the peaks.

More than once, our bus slid into the treacherous rocks, tilting almost completely sideways over the edge and holding us out over the endless expanse. Had I known the road was so poor at the time, I would have made my way down the mountain by my more typical choice of transportation: horseback. —Holly Walters is a native of Hutchinson. “Literally, my first lesson is going to be about me and Burlington, Iowa,” he said Wednesday. He will open his first lesson with Snake Alley, a topic of ongoing debate between he and his friends at the Omaha, Neb., university who argue San Francisco’s Lombard Street is the world’s curviest. That pride has solidified through his travels to about two dozen countries. His trip comes at an eventful time for South Korea.
