Villa Adriana (Tivoli) Outstanding Universal Value Brief Synthesis Villa Adriana is an exceptional architectural legacy of the great Roman Emperor Hadrian.

Villa Adriana (Tivoli)

Built as a retreat from Rome between 117 and 138 AD, the villa was designed as an ideal city and incorporates the architectural traditions of Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt. The remains of some 30 buildings extend over 120 hectares of the Tiburtine Hills, in Tivoli in the Lazio Region. While the structures appear to be arranged with no particular plan, the site comprises a complex and well planned arrangement together with a large number of residential and recreative buildings, extensive gardens and reflective pools, the site creates a serene and contemplative oasis. There are some thirty extant buildings within the site that can be broadly divided into four groups. A first group of buildings on the site includes the so called ‘Greek Theatre’ and ‘Temple of Cnidian Aphrodite’.

This project is being produced in collaboration with the Virtual World Heritage Laboratory (VWHL) at the University of Virginia (UVA), directed by Dr. Bernard Frischer and funded by the National Science Foundation. This large-scale recreation virtually interprets the entire villa complex in consultation with the world’s foremost villa scholars and educators. The project has been authored in the game engine of Unity as a live 3D multi-user online learning environment that allows students and visitors to immerse themselves in all aspects of the simulated villa. The project will not only accurately recreate the villa buildings but also include a complete Roman avatar system, non-player characters with artificial intelligence, furniture, indigenous vegetation, dynamic atmospheric system and sophisticated user interface. The Scottish Ten - About New Lanark

The first infant school in the world was created in New Lanark. It was inscribed as a cultural World Heritage Site in 2001 and is now a popular tourist attraction and home to the New Lanark Visitor Centre and New Lanark Mill Hotel. The tourism income helps to preserve the site for future generations and it is a popular attraction for school groups to show the role that weaving played in shaping Scotland. The location of the village within the ClydeValley allowed its mill to utilise the River Clyde for power.
