What I Learned About Sex and Feminism from Hooking Up with a Guy I Didn't Like. Originally published on The Huffington Post and republished here with the author’s permission. You don’t have to be in a formal relationship to have sex. After all, it may be a while until you find someone you want to be in a formal relationship with, and chances are you’ll want to have sex sooner than that. For many people, sex is a vitally important part of living – and it’s ridiculous to think you have to wait around for some perfect person to have it. I’ve enjoyed lots of safe, consensual sex with very cool people I wouldn’t call boyfriends, but we liked each other and we both knew what was up.
It wasn’t until my 30s that I let myself off the leash a bit to explore no-strings sexual intimacy. For instance, a few years back, I engaged in a brief fling with a man I met online – a handsome, together dude who I thought could make a solid hook-up buddy. I’ll try anything twice. I was shocked by my own response: I felt surprised. Hooking up, in this case, was a closed loop. Exactly. What Makes a Woman? The Likely Cause of Addiction Has Been Discovered, and It Is Not What You Think | Johann Hari. It is now one hundred years since drugs were first banned — and all through this long century of waging war on drugs, we have been told a story about addiction by our teachers and by our governments.
This story is so deeply ingrained in our minds that we take it for granted. It seems obvious. It seems manifestly true. Until I set off three and a half years ago on a 30,000-mile journey for my new book, Chasing The Scream: The First And Last Days of the War on Drugs, to figure out what is really driving the drug war, I believed it too. But what I learned on the road is that almost everything we have been told about addiction is wrong — and there is a very different story waiting for us, if only we are ready to hear it.
If we truly absorb this new story, we will have to change a lot more than the drug war. I learned it from an extraordinary mixture of people I met on my travels. I had a quite personal reason to set out for these answers. When I first learned about this, I was puzzled. A Canadian City Once Eliminated Poverty And Nearly Everyone Forgot About It. On a December afternoon, Frances Amy Richardson took a break from her quilting class to reflect on a groundbreaking experiment she took part in 40 years earlier. “Well, that was quite a few years ago,” she said. “There was a lot of people that really benefitted from it.” Between 1974 and 1979, residents of a small Manitoba city were selected to be subjects in a project that ensured basic annual incomes for everyone.
For five years, monthly cheques were delivered to the poorest residents of Dauphin, Man. – no strings attached. And for five years, poverty was completely eliminated. The program was dubbed “Mincome” – a neologism of “minimum income” – and it was the first of its kind in North America. The project’s original intent was to evaluate if giving cheques to the working poor, enough to top-up their incomes to a living wage, would kill people’s motivation to work. A final report was never released. Read more about the minimum income: $10,000 For Everybody?
“It was done.” Why Dauphin? 8 Ancient Rules for Life We Should Still Follow. Rido/Shutterstock If you’ve ever suffered from anxiety, or even depression, you might find some relief in the ancient philosophy of Stoicism. Wait: It’s probably not what you think, if you think of stoics as people who hide their emotions. According to Jules Evans, author of Philosophy for Life and Other Dangerous Situations: Ancient Philosophy for Modern Problems, a combination of philosophy and psychology is not only practical; it's an effective way of approaching today’s problems. Not unlike cognitive-behavioral therapy, the classical ideas explored by Evans make use of the mind to deal with our less helpful emotions. For anyone with the tiniest bit of an analytic bent, or those who have been unhappy for way too long—like Evans himself was in his college years—this combo approach can be extremely helpful. I found Evans’ book to be thoughtful and a pleasure to read; even the appendices are not to be missed. 1) It’s not events that cause us suffering, but our opinion about events.

Beginner Arm Workout With Weights | POPSUGAR Fitness. These Are the Female Heroines From History That Disney Would Never Touch. Frozen might have been a progressive milestone for Disney, but that princess factory still has a long way to go in terms of representation and diversity of character. Disney's last princess of color was Tiana from 2009's The Princess and the Frog, who unfortunately spent too much of the film as a frog. While fans have taken to creating their own "racebent" versions of classic Disney characters, the question still remains: Given how many great female characters there are in history and in literature, why is Disney not willing to look outside the box?
That was the question on former DreamWorks animator Jason Porath's mind when he launched his project "Rejected Princesses. " Describing himself as "a guy who likes interesting, lesser-known women and would like for them to get their time in the sun," Porath decided to create Disneyfied versions of female characters who would have a hard time receiving the green light from the studio. "Moreover, she did her own PR. "But that's not all. Feml 1. Best Running Tips | POPSUGAR Fitness. Chronology: A History of the Shiite-Sunni Split. My home in Aleppo is on a quiet cul-de-sac that ends against a large piece of land which, for as long as I can remember, has been a rocky wasteland of patchy yellow shrubs dotted with dirty plastic bags on a ground of dust mixed with broken glass. This triangular plot between residential neighborhoods was zoned to be a park for decades. Like most of Syria, it never reached its promised potential.
Last week, I heard that people finally found a use for the wasteland — they have begun to bury Aleppo’s dead in it. It’s not surprising that even the dreams of future parks have perished in Syria. In several days, the Syrian revolution will enter its fourth year. I remember when the number of dead were in the twenties and thirties then slowly crept up to the sixties and eighties.
Bring back ideology: Fukuyama's 'end of history' 25 years on. In the summer of 1989, the American magazine the National Interest published an essay with the strikingly bold title "The End of History? ". Its author, the political scientist Francis Fukuyama, announced that the great ideological battles between east and west were over, and that western liberal democracy had triumphed. With anti-communist protests sweeping across the former Soviet Union, the essay seemed right on the money. Fukuyama became an unlikely star of political science, dubbed the "court philosopher of global capitalism" by John Gray. When his book The End of History and the Last Man appeared three years later, the qualifying question mark was gone. The "end of history" thesis has been repeated enough to acquire the ring of truth – though it has also, of course, been challenged. Fukuyama was talking about ideas rather than events.
Fukuyama drew on the philosophy of Hegel, who defined history as a linear procession of epochs. When he wrote "The End of History?
