Despite innovative technology integration, impressive tech tools, and more augmented reality demonstrations than you can shake a stick at, there was one thing decidedly lacking in the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) annual conference held in Atlanta, Georgia from date 24 to July 1: zombies. The Walking Dead, the hugely successful AMC television series based on the best-selling comic book by Robert Kirkman, takes place in the Atlanta airport, and it’s all this teacher librarian could think about as I walked the crowded halls of the Georgia World Congress Center.
Thankfully, a fellow Library Journal Mover and Shaker, Jennifer LaGarde, also had zombies on the brain. LaGarde, who blogs at “The Adventures of Library Girl,” was the keynote speaker at the ISTE Librarian Network annual breakfast. Her talk, entitled “How to Survive the Zombie Librarian Apocalypse! There are obviously many more uses out there for them – but that is a discussion for another post. We’ve mentioned most of these before – in a post from way back when – so I won’t go into too much detail about each individual one, but we’ve added a few notable ones to the list. (Of note, the list is in no particular order). The vast majority of them work the same: plug your text into the box, select a few options, and you’ve got yourself a word cloud. Some offer more options than others, some offer word clouds with words going in any and all directions, some offer shapes, others create much simpler word clouds. Last year I attended my first ever ISTE conference.
To say it was a fantastic learning experience would be an understatement. I attended some incredible sessions, met some amazing educators, and thoroughly enjoyed following the #ISTE12 hashtag on Twitter before, during, and after the event. In fact, following the ISTE conference hashtag was a huge part of what made the conference so valuable for me, as educators shared resources from different sessions and discussed what they heard and saw at the conference. There was one morning when a nasty head cold kept me cooped up in my hotel room for half a day, but I was still able to participate in the conference events through Twitter. I'm a huge fan of Twitter as a tool for professional development. I can certainly understand and appreciate the celebratory atmosphere that pervades ISTE social events.
