Raw tomato chili sauce {home made ketchup} These days I’m on a hunt to make healthier versions of supermarket products. Following the success of the home made mustard and chocolate hazelnut spread (my alternative to Nutella), I’m now presenting you with my healthier version of ketchup. I’m not terribly proud to say that in our pantry, behind the olive oil and the apple cider vinegar, you’ll find a Sriracha hot sauce.
And on one of our fridge shelves, a half empty bottle of ketchup. They contain so many alien ingredients, it’s not even funny. And while I don’t fancy, B. sure does dig them. He likes them on his pizza, in sandwiches, at a BBQ. Eat lots of tomatoes, any way you can! Because this fruit that acts like a veggie is superloaded with health benefits. Here’s why you should always have some tomatoes in your kitchen*: They contain all four major carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene), each great on its own and all great together – their synergy provides benefits as well.

Kimchi (also spelt as kimchee), is a traditional Korean dish of fermented chilli peppers with a variety of vegetables, the most common being made with Chinese cabbage. It’s deeply ingrained into Korean culture and whilst it is mostly served as a side dish, it can also be used as a basis for other meals such as fried rice, broths and stews.
Many Koreans, myself included, will only last a few days before the cravings kick in and kimchi must be eaten in some shape or form. An example of how much we Koreans love kimchi? In 2005 a report was released that heavy consumption of kimchi could not be very good for your health…and as a result, the professor who released this statement received a variety of death threats. Kimchi is serious business. My mother’s kimchi is unlike any other that I’ve tasted, and whilst this is probably due to the care she takes with her particular recipe, it is extremely time-consuming (but very very worth it!). I remember making them once with my parents when I was a kid and they decided they wanted to make pickles. We got the recipe from one of my great-aunts.
Unfortunately, none of us really liked them. It was a case of poor communication I suspect; we were in love with the garlicky, briney dills that lived in wooden barrels in the shops of Kensington market at the time, but no doubt all we said was "pickles". These are really very different from a kosher style dill. However, as the name suggests they are lovely as a sandwich filling, along with cheese, ham, egg salad, chicken salad, summer sausage... or probably even just by themselves, if your bread and butter was as good as the pickles. I also suspect that first bread and butter recipe had too much sugar. 6 500-ml jars4 hours - 1 hour prep time 16 cups sliced cucumbers or zucchini4 medium onions1/3 cup pickling salt2 to 3 trays of ice cubes. Almost every weekend I bake. Lately I've been trying different recipes using my sourdough starter. At other times I baked yeasted artisan breads and sandwich breads. But one thing has remained constant: almost every time I have the oven heated for baking I make a batch of banana bread. I can safely say that I've made more batches of banana bread than any other bread.
I've tried a number of different recipes, but the majority of the time I fall back on the recipe below. It tastes great, it keeps well, it takes less than 10 minutes to prepare. This recipe is from the 1997 revision of the Joy of Cooking. As I said, I've tried close to a dozen different banana bread recipes but I like this one the best. I've also found that we enjoy this a lot more baking it in small loaf pans rather than a regular bread pan.
The other breads in the photo, by the way, are two whole wheat sourdough loaves and a sourdough rye. Banana Bread Makes 1 full-sized loaf or 2 small loaves Preheat the oven to 350. This recipe is featured in our cookbook, Skinny Ms. Lamb & Hummus burger. I have loved good Hummus for a few years now, even though I was a bit hesitant at first. The pale, creamy ‘paste’ didn’t seem like it would be something I would fall in love with at first taste, but that’s exactly what happened. I started eating it on/with anything and everything to the point that I could not look another bowl of hummus in the face. I hadn’t eaten hummus for about a year until Mediterranean Delicacies sent me a tub of their hummus and I wasn’t too excited to work with it, I have to be honest.
I felt uninspired and didn’t know what to do with it, other than use it as a spread or a dip for crudite (which is what I normally used it for). When I opened the tub the smell of chickpeas, tahini and garlic hit me and as I tasted it, it felt as if a whole world unfolded in front of me. Unlike a few year’s ago when I was still slightly inexperienced when it came to recipe development, I now had a plethora of recipe ideas I could play with. Japanese Pizza Recipe. One afternoon near Kyoto I found myself looking through a pane of glass at a man standing over a large, flat, hot griddle.
He held a large spatula in one hand, and would reach for various ingredients flanking his workstation with the other. I stood watching him for a few minutes as he turned out egg-battered cabbage on to the hot grill, formed the mixture into flattened cakes, and cooked each side until golden. An older Japanese man walked up beside me, probably noticed the perplexed look on my face, smiled and said to me, "Japanese Pizza. " Later, after asking around and doing a bit of reading, I realized I was watching the man make okonomiyaki.
Not at all like pizza at first glance, it does have many things in common - namely shape, the ability to easily customize each one, and affordability. I encourage you to give this a go - even if you think you don't like cabbage. Leeks are notoriously gritty. Combine the cabbage, leeks, flour, and salt in a bowl. Serves 1 - 2. Print Recipe.
