Light-Activated Muscle Could Make Robots Move Like Real Creatures

Bioengineers at MIT have genetically modified muscle cells to respond to light, which could be used to make easily controllable robot muscles that look and act like the animals on which they're based. This is the first time tough, powerful skeletal muscle has been modified to react to light. Optogenetics researchers have done it with cardiac cells, which are already primed to beat on their own — now skeletal muscle, which normally requires some outside stimulus, can contract and expand at the command of light bursts. Harry Asada, an engineering professor at MIT, said it's more effective and less bulky than stimulating muscle with electrodes, especially for a robotics system where light weight and mobility are key. Stretchy Solar Cells Power "Super Skin" The "super skin" developed by Stanford University researcher Zhenan Bao is self-powering, using polymer solar cells to generate electricity.

Stretchy Solar Cells Power "Super Skin"

The solar cells are not just flexible, but stretchable — they can be stretched up to 30 percent beyond their original length and snap back without any damage or loss of power. "With artificial skin, we can basically incorporate any function we desire," says Bao, a professor of chemical engineering, who presented her work on Feb. 20 at the AAAS annual meeting in Washington, D.C. "That is why I call our skin 'super skin.' It is much more than what we think of as normal skin. " BrentCT's Profile. The real-life 'Inception' helmet that can fool people into thinking fake scenes are real. Wearers were unable to tell the difference between real and fake TV shown to themCould be used as part of therapy By Daniel Bates Published: 17:34 GMT, 27 August 2012 | Updated: 13:13 GMT, 28 August 2012 Researchers have developed an Inception-style helmet which makes the human mind unable to tell what is real and what is a fake.

The device fools the wearer into thinking that TV scenes they are being shown are live when in fact they were recorded. Even after the mechanism of the experiment was explained, some test subjects were not able to distinguish between the two. Watch process of "acoustic levitation" in action. (CBS News) Back in April we showed you an amazing video that used sound and an adjustment on a camera's frame rate to create the optical illusion (or glitch in the Matrix) of liquids appearing to stop or go backwards in their flow.

It was mind-blowing. Well, get ready to have your jaw drop, as the optical illusion previously on display has been made into a scientific reality. Check it out. Okay, seriously, just how cool is science? The stunning video was posted by Argonne National Laboratory who write about the development: 23 incredible new technologies you'll see by 2021.

Tesla - Master of Lightning: A Weapon to End War. Tesla inherited from his father a deep hatred of war. Throughout his life, he sought a technological way to end warfare. He thought that war could be converted into, "a mere spectacle of machines. " In 1931 Tesla announced to reporters at a press conference that he was on the verge of discovering an entirely new source of energy.

Asked to explain the nature of the power, he replied, "The idea first came upon me as a tremendous shock... Why Nikola Tesla was the greatest geek who ever lived. The wearer can summon virtual gadgets and internet data at will, then dispel them like smoke when they’re done. Pattie Maes of the lab’s Fluid Interfaces group said the research is aimed at creating a new digital "sixth sense" for humans. In the tactile world, we use our five senses to take in information about our environment and respond to it, Maes explained. But a lot of the information that helps us understand and respond to the world doesn’t come from these senses.

Instead, it comes from computers and the internet. The prototype was built from an ordinary webcam and a battery-powered 3M projector, with an attached mirror — all connected to an internet-enabled mobile phone.
