There were no Chinese-language charter schools when I was growing up in Rhode Island in the ’80s. My family may have come from Russia a century ago, but I heard nary a “do svidanya” from my parents. So how on earth did I learn Russian, French, Chinese and enough Kazakh to translate the news? I ran press conferences in Russian, located lost luggage in Chinese and read Guy de Maupassant in French. There are people out there who speak all of these languages better than I do, but I learned them all — without shortcuts. It wasn’t easy. But, to quote Stephen Colbert: I am America, and so can you. Make the commitment. I made the commitment to learn Russian when I was reading Nikolai Gogol as a college freshman and with typical undergraduate intensity decided I simply had to understand the tragic Russian soul.
Take a hard class with lots of grammar. Words are the bricks, and grammar is the mortar. Troops go to boot camp before they deploy. Open your mouth. Get a job. Why you should learn to lucid dream. If you’ve never experienced it then you may find it hard to understand what lucid dreaming is all about.
In fact you may be thoroughly sceptical and dismiss the whole thing as silly nonsense. But I can tell you from personal experience that lucid dreams are very real and something that many millions of people regularly enjoy. Note: Due to the huge amount of interest that this post has generated I am now seriously considering writing a book on the subject, and I would welcome input from anyone with an interest. We’re dividing the work on this project into four basic phases.
Phase 1. Data migration As described here, we’ve imported over every account that we have on Xanga over to the new system so that anyone who could sign into Xanga can still sign into Xanga 2.0. (Try it here!) Finally and most important of all, we’ve imported over 2 million blogs from the old system. . * We’ve archived the blogs of the hundreds of thousands of blogs where the user has logged in in the past 5 years and has at least two subscribers. * We did an additional set of archives for 200k users who had logged in the past year and had at least 10 blogs. * We’ve also archived the blogs of every single user that’s ever been premium at any point in the past… And of course, a lot of you guys archived your own blogs using the old Xanga archive generator.
