Si l’oeuvre de Gordon Matta-Clark défie toute catégorisation simple, ses idées vont exercer une influence de plus en plus grande sur les architectes et les artistes visuels pendant les décennies qui suivront sa mort, en 1978. Son Garbage Wall (1970) est une sculpture née d’une performance, et ses coupes, comme Bronx Floors (1972–1973), sont des découpages dans des bâtiments abandonnés retirés pour être exposés dans une galerie. Il cofonde en 1971 le restaurant Food, pour en faire un lieu où les artistes peuvent se préparer des repas économiques les uns pour les autres, et cuisiner pour les ouvriers des environs.
Food devient une sorte de performance, et contribue à modifier l’économie du Lower Manhattan alors que personnalités en vue et collectionneurs d’art se rendent à Soho pour y manger et rencontrer des artistes. Le fonds Gordon Matta-Clark, maintenant en dépôt au CCA, est soigneusement réuni et conservé par Jane Crawford, veuve de l’artiste.
