It’s a progression you’ll see often as a jazz guitarist, so being able to confidently solo over these chords is an essential skill. When first learning to blow over these chords, we often start with the Dorian and Mixolydian modes over each chord, respectively. But, while playing these modes is correct, they often sound too diatonic, not enough tension to really be “jazzy.”

This is where Bebop Scales come into play. As a bonus, there’s a video included to show you how these scales sound in an improvisational context. So grab your guitar, crank your amp and get ready to add a little jazziness to your solos. Minor Bebop Scale The first scale we’ll look at is the Minor Bebop Scale. Jazz Guitar Corner: Five Must-Know Jazz Guitar Turnarounds

Turnarounds often occur at the end of a tune, or a section of a tune, and they essentially are used to “turn the tune back around” to the top of the form or start of the next section. Hence the name. Because they are so often used in the standard jazz repertoire, it’s important to not only be able to play the basic version of this progression, which you can see in the first example below, but it’s important to have at least a handful of variations that you can use for these chords in order to keep things fresh and exciting in your playing.

In this lesson, we’ll be exploring five common variations of a two-bar turnaround progression, using tri-tone substitutions to build up and expand your options when comping and soloing over these common changes. To learn more about the techniques used in this lesson, check out my article “Chord Substitution vs. Sing-Along Guitar Songs: Transposable Chords & Lyrics (listed by title) Drop 2 Voicings. Drop 2 Voicings

Similarly, there are drop 1, drop 3, drop 2 & 4, etc. Drop 2 voicings are important because most of these chords are easy for a guitarist to play on 4 adjacent strings. Drop 2 is just a name for how the chords were derived from another chord. This is only important for naming the voicings. I will describe how they are derived then I will show you the voicings. The Crimson Guitars workshop blog – 30th September 2011 Part of what I’m hoping makes Crimson Guitars better than most other custom guitar builders is that we don’t just build the wooden bits and send them off for finishing and then stick stock hardware in place, if necessary we’ll stick our necks out and go that extra mile, be it bespoke finishes in our own spray booth or bespoke hardware, even down to learning an entire new skill or process just to get your guitar right. On that tack I’ve been thinking about, and building prototypes of, ball bearing tremolos for a couple of years now..
