Paris, Apr. 2012: The works of Mathieu Mercier walk a curious line between art and consumer object, often using mass-produced products as medium. By inhabiting this critical intersection, his pieces question the essence and cultural status of the art object in its ubiquitous relationship with consumer society and the legacy of modernism. http://www.artslant.com/ew/main

http://artlog.com/ Some works are site-specific, such as Emil Lukas’ Skin, which modifies the industrial space, or Ben Gocker’s chaotic arrangement of objects, which is best described as a “visual poem.” There is a common thread of collage and combinations of disparate imagery through all of the works. Hew Locke, a Briton of Guyanese descent, created his own coat of arms from exotic imagery, mimicking the cultural adaptation of colonized peoples and the fungibility of culture and identity.

FOUND by Adam Staley in Mesa, Arizona This was torn in pieces, found on our porch in the cup holder of our camping chair. It took a while to figure out what and who the note was intended for, but a neighbor girl obviously was quite upset about not getting a cupcake. We guess she abandoned the plan to deliver it, maybe because of the “overly harsh” language in the note. haha!

In follow-up to " Tender ", his dedicated volume on vegetables, London-based food writer Nigel Slater turns to the fruit section of his garden in " Ripe ". The beautifully photographed tome serves as a comprehensive primer on 23 types of fruit and a collection of more than 300 recipes, but most importantly, reads like an alphabetically organized love letter to each and every variety, from apples and apricots to gooseberries, damsons and elderflower. Overseeing a 40-foot terrace garden off his London flat, Slater extolls his devotion to fruit, which despite their secondary role in the importance of his growing efforts, fill him with an unparalleled sense of joy and wonder season after season.

Heavy Eyes

I was in a recording studio this weekend, and I was lucky enough to see one of these in person, the Roland RE-201, more commonly known as the ‘Space Echo’. It uses a reel of tape to record delay sounds, rather than its digital counterparts today. Unfortunately it was broken, but what a fabulous piece of 70’s industrial design. Read more about it here .
