Ruth Bader Ginsburg remembered by Lisa Beattie Frelinghuysen

I had worked at the American Civil Liberties Union and knew of her advocacy establishing gender equality in the law. I was beyond excited years later to interview for a judicial clerkship with her, and yet the interview began in the most awkward way. She appeared at the door of her Watergate apartment, elegant and soft spoken. I noticed my writing samples in her left hand, a bright red circle around a few words on the first page. My heart sank. That year, October term 1995, a big women’s rights case came before the supreme court: United States v Virginia, challenging the male-only admission policy at Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Her good friend, Justice Scalia, dissented, and despite their close friendship, he took the opportunity to level a few swings at the majority. The justice and I returned 20 years later to visit Virginia Military Institute. The incomparable and notorious RBG. Last October, while Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was speaking at Amherst College, she was asked how she thought people in the future would characterize this period in American history.

The incomparable and notorious RBG

Ginsburg’s answer: “as an aberration.” And yet her death means that the age of Trump will almost certainly be our new normal. With Ginsburg on the Supreme Court, the power to shape our Constitution was split between four liberals, four archconservatives, and Chief Justice John Roberts — a conservative whose respect for institutions and for procedural regularity sometimes tempered his fellow conservatives’ tendencies.

Justice Ginsburg’s death means a sixth Republican appointee and Trump’s third. On issues ranging from abortion to elections to health care, the Supreme Court will now be entirely dominated by conservatives. All About Heaven - Rules for using this site. 1.

MONEY - When I first set up the site I asked that people did not use the contents of this site to make money, and I said "as I have provided it free of charge, I would like you to keep to the same set of values". It is extremely clear that this is being ignored, and indeed the request was probably counter-productive to the principle objective of the site, which is to make sure this information is widely disseminated. I'm Rebecca Roberts in Washington. Today, we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. As millions of Americans honor his legacy today with a national day of service, we take a moment to reflect on Dr. King's life and message with his own words. One Thousand and One Nights. Collection of Middle Eastern stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age One Thousand and One Nights (Arabic: ألف ليلة و ليلة‎, romanized: Alf layla wa-layla)[1], is a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age.

One Thousand and One Nights

It is often known in English as the Arabian Nights, from the first English-language edition (c. 1706 – c. 1721), which rendered the title as The Arabian Nights' Entertainment.[2] What is common throughout all the editions of the Nights is the initial frame story of the ruler Shahryār and his wife Scheherazade and the framing device incorporated throughout the tales themselves. The stories proceed from this original tale; some are framed within other tales, while others are self-contained. Some editions contain only a few hundred nights, while others include 1,001 or more. Synopsis[edit] The main frame story concerns Shahryār (Persian: شهريار‎, from Middle Persian šahr-dār, lit. Evolving Arabic versions[edit] U.S. Copyright Office.
