Gamers Unlock Protein Mystery That Baffled AIDS Researchers For Years | News & Opinion | PCMag.com
In just three weeks, gamers deciphered the structure of a key protein in the development of AIDS that has stumped scientists for years. According to a study published Sunday in the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology , the findings could present a significant breakthrough for AIDS and HIV research. Using an online game called Foldit, players were able to predict the structure of a protein called retroviral protease, an enzyme that plays a critical role in the way HIV multiplies. Unlocking the build of the protein could theoretically aid scientists in developing drugs that would stop protease from spreading. “Following the failure of a wide range of attempts to solve the crystal structure of M-PMV retroviral protease by molecular replacement, we challenged players of the protein folding game Foldit to produce accurate models of the protein,” the study reads.by Nevil Hunt A desperate man spent about 30 minutes asking people to call 911 after his friend slipped under the surface of a manmade lake in Regina. The woman who finally called the emergency services speculates no one else helped because of racism.

Terms Used by Psychoanalysis
T HE F OLLOWING T ERMS are presented in alphabetical order; however, someone beginning to learn psychoanalysis needs to stay conscious of the ways that each major theorist uses particular terms in his or her particular way. I have indicated those terms that are particularly tied to an individual theorist, as well as those terms that are used differently by two different psychoanalysts. For an introduction to the four psychoanalytical theorists currently influencing the discipline, see the Psychoanalysis Modules in this site.Deontologistics
I’ve finished editing and commenting on my notes from the second McDowell lecture after a hectic weekend of travel and whatnot. I hope as many people like these as seemed to like the last ones ( here ). It was fascinating hearing McDowell talk and getting to grips with his position from my own Sellarsian/Brandomian perspective. What’s most interesting is that I’ve independently been hitting on some similar ideas to McDowell, but coming from a different, and I believe slightly more productive direction. I’m hoping to give a paper at the upcoming Dublin Sellars’ workshop which deals with these issues (‘Is there a TV in my head?Flows of signs on a network

The future is here: Driverless airport pods a reality | News.com.au
THE future of public transport has finally arrived with Heathrow Airport officially unveiling laser-guided travel pods. The world's first fully-automated ULTra Personal Pod cars, designed by Advanced Transport Systems, were found to cut the time it takes passengers to move from the terminal to the car park by 60 per cent during a recent trial. Promoted as being immune to accidents and traffic jams, using thinner roads and requiring no drivers, they are being hailed as the future of transport. The airport's fleet of 21 pods will take passengers to the correct terminal using information from their frequent flyer cards or by typing their flight details into the computer, with no stops in between. The pods run on their own network over a 3.8 kilometre route and can reach speeds up to 40km/h. Four people can fit in each pod, and they could transport up to 500,000 passengers a year, replacing 50,000 shuttle bus trips.Beta

1 . Never stop thinking. This is important. If someone ever says to you ‘You need to stop thinking so much,’ call them ignorant in your head and keep thinking deeper. If you're not paranoid, you haven't been paying attention. It's an old line, coined half in wry humour, half in deadly earnest, but it has a special pungency for Wellington filmmaker Errol Wright. Wright and co-director Abi King-Jones have spent most of the last three years making Operation 8, a restrained, even sober survey of the October 2007 "anti-terror raids" and their aftermath, that patiently paints a disturbing picture of the use of state force to suppress political dissent. Wright is aware that the undertaking will have attracted close official attention. He recalls driving along a remote road late one evening and noticing a car a couple of hundred metres behind. "My cellphone rang," he says, "so I pulled over to answer it.

LENIN'S TOMB
It's coming up to that time of year again. The timetable for Marxism 2012 is up on the website. You'll see that I'm speaking on ' Imperialism and Anti-Imperialism in the Liberal Tradition ' on Friday 6th June. There'll be time later to explain what that's all about. As for other speakers, well ... I mean, do you need another reason to go?Jakarta – Activists from various human rights NGOs urged Attorney General Basrief Arief to challenge a Supreme Court ruling that acquitted the alleged mastermind of the murder of rights activist Munir Said Thalib by using US diplomatic cables recently leaked by whistle-blower website WikiLeaks. The cables, which linked the murder to the National Intelligence Agency (BIN), should have been presented as new evidence to prosecute former BIN deputy chairman Muchdi Purwoprandjono, Choirul Anam from the Solidarity Action Committee for Munir (Kasum) told a press conference on Friday. "The Attorney General cannot argue that his office did not have new evidence to file a review against Muchdi's acquittal. These cables are new evidence," Anam said.
