HDI surprisingly similar to GDP/capita. Human Development Index HDI is advanced as being a better indicator than “GDP per capita” in measuring the progress of Nations.

HDI surprisingly similar to GDP/capita

HDI is calculated by UNDP from indicators for health, education and living standard (income/person). The methodology is quite complicated but it well documented BUT look at a plot of the correlation between HDI and GDP/capita or all countries in Gapminder World You will be surprised! There is today a very strong correlation between rising GDP/capita. If you exclude 6 countries on the right side of the strong correlation that have higher GDP/capita than HDI due to oil or diamonds; and if you exclude 6 former Soviet Republics with collapsed economy but still high literacy rate on the left side of the correlation; you will find that the GDP/capita and the value on Human Development Index follow each other very closely from the worst-off country Congo to the best-off country Norway.

OPHI's Alkire Foster Method for Measuring Multidimensional Poverty

Yet poor people themselves define their poverty much more broadly, to include lack of education, health, housing, empowerment, humiliation, employment, personal security and more. No one indicator, such as income, is uniquely able to capture the multiple aspects that contribute to poverty. Multidimensional poverty encompasses a range of deprivations that a household may suffer. The number of indicators and specific indicators used depend on the purpose of the measure. Common purposes include national poverty measures that reflect changes over time, targeting of services or conditional cash transfers and monitoring and evaluation.

At a glance, multidimensional measures present an integrated view of the situation. OPHI has developed and applied measures and tests of multidimensional poverty, wellbeing, chronic poverty and equality of opportunity. The Alkire and Foster method has been adopted by national governments.

Population crisis: Amid global population growth, a loss of urgency

The rate of global population growth will largely be determined by their generation, the largest in history. (Rick Loomis / Los Angeles Times) More photos By Kenneth R. Weiss, Los Angeles Times July 22, 2012 First of five parts JAIPUR, India — Ramjee Lal Kumhar and his bride, Mamta, first laid eyes on each other inside a billowing wedding tent festooned with garlands of marigolds. He was 11 years old. Their families had arranged the marriage.

At 15 and finally able to grow a mustache, Ramjee made a startling announcement: He was done having children. "We cannot afford it," he said, standing with arms crossed in the dirt courtyard of the compound he shares with 12 relatives, a cow, several goats and some chickens in the northern state of Rajasthan. Horrified, his mother and grandmother pleaded with him to reconsider. "Having one son is like having one eye," his grandmother said. On a planet with 11 billion people, however, all those problems will be worse. Programme des Nations Unies pour le développement. Annual Report 2011. Annual Report 2011

Inaugural Address (January 20, 1949)—Miller Center. Mr. Vice President, Mr. Chief Justice, fellow citizens: I accept with humility the honor which the American people have conferred upon me.

I accept it with a resolve to do all that I can for the welfare of this Nation and for the peace of the world. In performing the duties of my office, I need the help and the prayers of every one of you. Each period of our national history has had its special challenges. It may be our lot to experience, and in a large measure bring about, a major turning point in the long history of the human race. The peoples of the earth face the future with grave uncertainty, composed almost equally of great hopes and great fears. It is fitting, therefore, that we take this occasion to proclaim to the world the essential principles of the faith by which we live, and to declare our aims to all peoples.

The American people stand firm in the faith which has inspired this Nation from the beginning. From this faith we will not be moved. That false philosophy is communism. Indicateurs. The Sustainable Development Indicators (SDIs) are used to monitor the EU Sustainable Development Strategy (EU SDS) in a report published by Eurostat every two years.

They are presented in ten themes. Headline indicators Of more than 100 indicators, eleven have been identified as headline indicators. They are intended to give an overall picture of whether the European Union has achieved progress towards sustainable development in terms of the objectives and targets defined in the strategy. For a more complete picture it is necessary to look at the progress of all indicators within a theme. Portugal's migrants hope for new life in old African colony

This group of young professionals have gathered at the Associação Portuguesa for their weekly lunch. It is a reunion of sorts, for the group of expatriates to talk about all things Portuguese over the black and white checkered tablecloths. All eight were born in Portugal but now live in Mozambique. The southern African country is famed for its prawn curries, balmy Indian Ocean beaches and local jazz, but the former Portuguese colony is experiencing a resurgence in foreign investment – and foreign migrants – as coal reserves are discovered in the north, urban centres develop in a frenzy of construction, and Europe slides further into economic meltdown. Rapports mondiaux.

SKYTRUTH: using remote sensing and digital mapping to educate the public and policymakers about the environmental consequences of human activities. Sustainable Development - Environment. Additional tools Introduction Sustainable Development stands for meeting the needs of present generations without jeopardizing the ability of futures generations to meet their own needs – in other words, a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come.

Sustainable Development - Environment

It offers a vision of progress that integrates immediate and longer-term objectives, local and global action, and regards social, economic and environmental issues as inseparable and interdependent components of human progress. Sustainable development will not be brought about by policies only: it must be taken up by society at large as a principle guiding the many choices each citizen makes every day, as well as the big political and economic decisions that have.

This requires profound changes in thinking, in economic and social structures and in consumption and production patterns. The world as you've never seen it before. World Population Prospects, the 2010 Revision. Éducation au développement durable - Accueil.
