This ‘product slider’ is similar to a straight forward gallery, except that there is a slider to navigate the items, i.e. the bit the user controls to view the items. Simple stuff. jQuery already has the plugins to create these effects so we don’t have to go about creating them ourselves from scratch. How to Solve the Problem To create the slider controlled gallery, we need the following: Markup that allows us to place several items within a list, and that overflows out of sight.A slider widget to control what subsection of products we can see.Logic to translate the sliders position to slide the products inversely (i.e. we slide left-to-right, the products go right-to-left).

Media Queries | frontender.com.ua. How to use Modernizr. Photo by Stéfan There is a tool that came to make our lives as progressive web designers a bit easier: Modernizr. In this short tutorial, learn how to apply this handy script to maximum effect on your sites. An overview Although CSS3’s use has been increasing among web designers, browser support for some of its features is still inexistent. Lately, I’ve been using Modernizr more and more to cater for those browsers that don’t support specific CSS3 properties—for example, on my site—, and it makes the development much easier because I know I’m providing these lesser browsers with an alternative experience, rather than just ignoring them. Bear in mind (and this is even splashed on Modernizr’s front page), that Modernizr doesn’t actually magically enable these properties for browsers that don’t support them. How it works To install Modernizr, download the file from this page. The second step is to include on your html tag a class of “no-js”: Why add this tag?
What does this mean? JavaScript. CSS Block vs Inline - CSS Made Simple. HTML elements can be displayed either in block or inline style. Are You Using CSS3 Appropriately? CSS3 is exciting. When it was introduced, it seemed like the untapped potential of Web Design was finally unlocked. It proposes speedier web page response times due to the reduction of images needed for things such as text effects and web buttons for our UIs. It cuts back our dependency on JavaScript for visual presentation purposes such as animation effects, not only resulting in less code (always a good thing) but also equating to even better web page performance. It promises less reliance on expensive graphics software like Photoshop. But has anything, in the broader scheme of visual design, really changed? We’re still dealing with the same users, the same content and the same user-centered design philosophy. The new CSS3 capabilities should be treated just like any other web technology we work with: It should always support user-centered design and the site’s goals and purpose.
CSS3 Does Not Change Design Using CSS3 Appropriately Unfortunately, it almost falls apart in IE7. Conclusion. Introducing Mobile Javascript Events and Creating an Interactive Experience. In case you haven’t heard already, the big thing at the moment is responsive design. Everything has to be responsive in some way, so it’ll work on what is becoming an increasingly huge portion of traffic: mobile devices.
Once the user is on your site though, how does one make the most out of their experience? Today I’m going to show you a bunch of things which aren’t in the spotlight when it comes to mobile design, but could really improve experience. You may have heard of event handlers. They handle how a browser responds to an event. So you can add an event handler for clicking, for hovering, and for touching on a touch screen. What we’re going to look at is how we can handle a touch, since most modern phones have a touch screen.
What does it all mean? So what can we do with all this stuff? Now when the user touches the screen we change the content to just ‘hello!’. Gathering Information So that’s great, but how do we actually turn this into something useful? Easy, huh? PixelsDaily | Free PSDs & Resources for Designers.
Another CSS image replacement technique.
A new image replacement technique was recently added to the HTML5 Boilerplate project. This post explains how it works and how it compares to alternative image replacement techniques. Here’s the CSS behind the recent update to the image replacement helper class in HTML5 Boilerplate. It has also made its way into the Compass framework. What does each declaration do? Font:0/0 a – a shorthand property that zeros out the font size and line-height.
In the HTML5 Boilerplate image replacement helper, we’ve also removed any border and background-color that may be on the element. Benefits over text-indent methods The new technique avoids various problems with any text-indent method, including the one proposed by Scott Kellum to avoid iPad 1 performance problems related to large negative text indents. Works in IE6/7 on inline-block elements. Drawbacks No image replacement hack is perfect. It’s worth noting that the NIR image replacement technique avoids these drawbacks, but lacks support in IE6/7. Journal and Portfolio of Saddam Azad, User Interface Designer and Front-End Web Developer. Headers footers columns and templates - Web Education Community Group. Introduction To this point, the articles in the Web Standards Curriculum have focused on single topics, ranging from soft concepts like typography and colour, to hard technical instruction on subsets of CSS 2.1.
This article takes on broader focus; its purpose is to show the reader how to take the material covered so far, and use it to build a complete site template. The principal assumption of this material is that you are already familiar with the CSS float, display, and position properties. Self directed learners who want to leap straight into the meat of the CSS are reluctantly invited to skip to section IV of this article, “Single column layout implementation” — but should note that in doing so, they will neglect discussion of how successful project planning leads to the layout and implementation of a Web site.
