The Redesign Trap. What does fashion actually do? It sells you a suit made of a material that could last five years, and as soon as you have bought it tells you that you can’t wear it any longer because a newer one has already been created. The same principle can be used to sell anything. The motto of styling is ‘It’s Out’. As soon as one thing is sold they must invent another to supersede it.– Bruno Munari, Design as Art A redesign is a symptom of a deeper problem. A good design doesn’t need a refresh or a redesign unless the function dramatically changes. The cause of a redesign is an imbalance—a strong focus on style over substance. Realigning Redesigning has a sibling by the name of realigning. Water and Ice I really like the following passage—Chapter 76—from the Tao Te Ching: Men are born soft and supple; dead they are stiff and hard.

I think it carries much meaning for the world of design as well as life. Water on the other hand itself is formless, yet it’s able to take form. F | web design Essentials. Another Weird Product Of Digital Design: Bendable Wood | Co. Design. Digital technology has enabled designers to get their ideas into the world relatively cheaply and quickly. Now, in order to showcase the myriad possibilities of laser-cutting, the Dutch digital-manufacturing company Snijlab has created an altogether new type of material: folding wood, which can bend back and forth without snapping. The effect is achieved by making thin cuts on both sides of a single sheet of wood. The start of each row of cuts shifts by half the length of the previous row. The result creates enough torsion to allow the wood to bend like a hinge. The innovation isn’t proprietary; in fact, Snijlab includes the technique in its handbook as a way to inspire people to start laser-cutting. Thus far, Snijlab has used the technique to make paper-notebook and iPad covers, though it imagines the wood could be used in doors, chairs, and cabinetry.

So I’ve been taking it slow with Walter Isaacson’s definitive biography of the man, hoping for insights into how Jobs’s personality, timing, and influences managed to produce so much innovation--and what the rest of us might learn from his example. I wanted to share those thoughts with you, in a regular series. I hope you enjoy, and, if you’re reading the book as well, I hope you’ll add your own thoughts in the comments below. --Ed.]

Steve Jobs was an exceptionally unreasonable man. It’s a testament to his vision and other virtues that so many around him continued working for him--and even loved him, despite all those failings. One day Jobs barged into the cubicle of one of the Atkinson’s engineers and uttered his usual "This is shit. " This struck me for a couple of reasons. Isaacson continues: To be fair, Jobs could have accomplished this without being such a jerk. Obviously, we can’t all be Steve Jobs. Check Out The Skinniest House In The World | Co. Design. There are skinny houses. And then there is Jakub Szcz? Sny's Keret House, which could make Calista Flockhart look like a fatty. At its most generous, the proposed place, in Warsaw, Poland, will clock in at 4 feet wide. At its narrowest, it'll be just 28 inches wide -- thinner than the average doorway.

And we complain about our sardine can in New York... The house (officially an "art installation," because it doesn't meet Polish building code) is slated to fill a crack between a pair of buildings in Warsaw's Wola district. Szcz? Kidding, kidding. Aesthetically, the Keret House isn't gonna win any beauty contests. [Images via ArchDaily.com] Crack one open. Reminds me of these honest logos. Pepsi logo illustration by MODY-89, via Grace Oris. STRANDED in flood-ravaged Bangkok without his medication, luggage or even a toothbrush, disabled Holocaust survivor Peter Thier says his treatment by Qantas has been appalling. ''We will never fly Qantas again - this is ridiculous,'' said Mr Thier, 74, from Marsfield in Sydney's northern suburbs. Mr Thier is one of thousands of Qantas passengers stranded at the airline's key south-east Asian hubs Singapore and Bangkok, many of whom are furious at their treatment. Trying to console hundreds of angry passengers at a Bangkok hotel late yesterday, Qantas's Thailand manager Louis Moser described his airline's grounding of planes as ''unprecedented'' and said he believed it could not last long because if it does ''we will go broke''.

Advertisement They arrived hours early for a Qantas flight to Sydney departing that evening, not wanting any hassles at the airport. But when the men checked in, they felt Qantas staff were not being frank with them. Facebook. Daily Inspiration #959. Hyperrealistic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Dave Rapoza. Zac Davey. Steven Hurley. Why Google Won't Talk About Google+ Stats And Why There Is Blood In The Water. Read that first. Then read this: The tech press will continue to attack Google+. I think that's just fine. We all know the truth. It's to the point where I can't keep up and I'm only following 4,900. Yes, Twitter, alongside of it, is moving a lot faster. The tech press won't give Google+ a chance and that's OK. We can write them off as "not getting it" or "not trying hard enough" but that really won't help. Hell, all they need to do is call up the folks who make Topsy. But I won't do their work for them. After all, let's say there's a million posts a day being made on Google+. Vic knows that you should never help the competition. See, the Tech Press wants Google+ to compete with Twitter and Facebook. I think that's unfair for a service that's way late to the game.

Hint: it won't compete. Google+ is NOT going to get your friends and family. Google+ is NOT going to get the news media. So, what's Google+ for, then? Should I keep going?
