What is Effective Elearning?

Does This Look Familiar? It's widely accepted that elearning requires meaningful interactivity to improve learners' skills and deliver results. What’s not well understood is that not all types of interactivity are equally effective. In fact, the least effective forms of interactivity are also some of the most popular because they are easy to implement using templates and wizards. Examples include: Fact-based quizzes dressed up as mini-games Clicking glossy buttons to reveal more text Interactivity that is over-produced and under-designed Creating effective elearning does require some creativity and knowledge of basic design principles, but that’s what makes it interesting. Learner-Centric Design A learner-centered design begins with the question, “What must the learner be able to DO upon completion of the training, and what challenges will they face along the way?”

Example: Make the Sale Start by asking "What is the performance goal? " Intrinsic Feedback Motivation. The Agile Elearning Design Manual - Think Small (Iterations, Action Maps, Storyboards, and Mini-Modules) We explored the waterfall approach towards elearning development in a prior post of this series. As you will notice in the above representation of the model, the issues are: Too much time gets spent in upfront design and planning when all of this is quite likely to change. Customers get to see working elearning pretty late in the process - as a consequence we run the risk of an endless cycle of amendments. Actual deployment takes months from actual initiation of the project - this delays learner feedback, which is key to evolving the training content and increasing effectiveness. Can we reduce flab in our analysis and design phase?

Can we create more opportunities for customer feedback? Can we release working elearning quicker, to harness learner feedback sooner than later? Run Shorter Sprints - Be Iterative Please refer the diagram above. The Elearning Inception The Elearning Inception is a visioning exercise cum training analysis phase. Storyboarding - Simple, Lightweight design. eLearning Design. The Rapid eLearning Blog. Creating great interactive learning experiences requires a few core building blocks: relevant content, pull versus push, and real-world decisions.

The Rapid eLearning Blog

With those building blocks you're able to structure effective learning scenarios that are meaningful to the learner and helps meet the objectives of the course. One of those building blocks in creating relevant content or content that is placed in a meaningful context. Essentially, you want to recreate the types of scenarios that are similar to the ones the learner has in real life. This allows them to see the content in ... Read the full article After last week's post on the different drag & drop interaction examples, I had quite a few emails asking for tips on how to create drag and drop interactions for elearning. Sliders are used as a means to make adjustments/selections or as a simple way to navigate content. It helps to look at what others are doing to get ideas and inspiration for your own work.
