Google's Not the Only One With a Driverless Car This Year

Looks like CES 2013 might be the year of the driverless car as both Audi and Toyota/Lexus have confirmed they’ll be bringing their new autonomous vehicles to the show. Move over Google, looks like you’re not the only game in town anymore, and maybe we’ll actually be able to buy a self-driving Audi or a Toyota soon. The luxury arm of Toyota, Lexus, will be there showing off a LS 600h kitted out with radar and cameras to literally drive itself around, similar to what Google’s been doing. Even though Google’s been using the Toyota Prius as its base for its own autonomous cars, Toyota’s doing its own independent thing so it’ll be interesting to see how it compares. Audi on the other hand, apparently has a car that’ll find a parking space and go off and park itself on its own, which sounds fantastic to me.

From the 119,000 ideas received. three vehicle and technology concepts were produced and are now on display at the 2012 Beijing auto show. Prepare for Autonomous Traffic Jams

To date, autonomous cars outfitted with technology from Google have driven themselves more than 200,000 miles around California. Folks in Silicon Valley sometimes tease Google for its driverless car obsession, but the end game seems pretty clear to me. Getting millions of drivers to take their hands off their steering wheels would free them up to trawl the Web, perform billions of searches, and see billions of ads.
