De acuerdo con un estudio de Brent Berlin y Paul Kay (1969), los diferentes términos para marrón, púrpura, rosa, naranja y gris no emergen en un lenguaje hasta que ese lenguaje logra la distinción entre verde y azul.
En su investigación, encontraron que las primeras distinciones lingüísticas en aparecer son aquellas para blanco y negro y para rojo y verde/amarillo.
