One Year Food Storage Organization System. One of the things I struggled with in the area of food storage was keeping track of everything and making sure I was storing enough. That gets complicated when you are wanting to store enough food for ONE WHOLE YEAR for a large group of people. I've talked lots about WHY I am crazy enough to even want to attempt this so I'll just carry on from there. I've tried several food storage calculators and messed around with my own versions but was never satisfied until recently. I was looking for a simple way to keep track so I came up with a system that's easy to read and see at a glance. It can be used for any length of food storage and include any of your favourite foods.

I used various sources for my calculations. Most sources say 400lbs of grain per year per person is a minimal goal. If anything I erred on the side of abundance with the suggested amounts from these sources. Since this is MY list is really will only serve as a jumping off point for others. Free User Manuals and Owners Guides | ManualsOnline.com. “Peak Oil Demand” = Peak Oil. Originally posted at Resilience.org A new phrase has entered our energy lexicon—peak oil demand. The essential idea: prophets of doom who warned about a looming global petroleum shortfall (“peak oil”) were wrong; instead of a downturn in supply, we’re instead seeing the shrinkage of demand for oil. A non-problem just solved itself! Nothing to see, folks; move along. What’s wrong with this framing of our energy situation? To understand what and why, it’s helpful to start with a sense of who’s crooning the “peak demand” tune: it’s long-time peak oil critics like Daniel Yergin—the oil industry spokesman who, throughout the past decade of soaring oil prices, repeatedly assured the public that prices were going to fall back to historic levels (he was wrong each time, see here and here.).

Is it true that demand for oil has fallen? Americans are buying hybrid cars and electric vehicles, and manufacturers are engineering traditional gasoline engines to be more fuel-efficient. Fair enough. Cargo bikes cause pedal revolution. For the better part of the past decade, a handful of manufacturers of electric-assist bicycles, or e-bikes, have tried, and largely failed, to crack the U.S. bicycle market. "They'll sell one million e-bikes in Europe this year," Don DiCostanzo, chief executive of Irvine, Calif.

-based Pedego Electric Bikes, recently told me. "And we'll be lucky with 100,000 units sold in the U.S. " While the number of recreation bikers slowly dropped as the U.S. population grew over the past 16 years, the ranks of cyclists who pedal to and from work has swelled considerably -- by as much as 77 percent from 2000 to 2010 in the most bike-friendly cities. On paper, bike commuters look like a slam dunk for e-bike marketers. Bikes with electric assist are fast, they require less exertion and therefore produce less sweaty work clothes. Pete Prebus is a former competitive mountain biker who started the Web site Electric Bike Report after becoming enamored with e-bikes. Phillip Ross, co-founder of Portland, Ore. Pressure Canning 101 – Canning Across America. Just the thought of firing up this potentially explosive stove-top appliance sends many of us running for cover! Whistling petcocks, clouds of scalding steam, and slippery jars all compound to create nightmarish visions of 3rd degree burns and spaghetti sauce dripping from the ceiling. It’s true, pressure canners are potentially dangerous, but they are perfectly safe when the manufacturer’s directions are carefully followed. Never use a pressure canner that does not have an accompanying instruction manual. Heat is the weapon the home canner wields in the battle against decay and toxins. High acid foods like most fruits and pickles can be safely processed at 212 F–the boiling point of water. Low acid foods which include vegetables, meats, and fish must be processed at 240 F to ensure that harmful, heat tolerant bacteria are destroyed. Read through and follow these simple steps for pressure-free pressure canning: • Place filled jars, tops screwed on, in the wire basket.

Who We Are – Canning Across America. Canning Meats at Home. Canning Meats at Home A Pressure Canner is required for canning meats and fresh vegetables without vinegar added. Although tomatoes are thought of as a vegetable, they are technically a fruit and the older varieties contain enough acid for water bath canning. Many years ago accidents did happen with early pressure canners 'exploding' so they earned a bad reputation. More modern pressure canners have multiple safety features.

I'd still recommend you watch the canner during the whole time it is under pressure, and keep the safety relief valves or plugs pointed in a safe direction. Make sure they point away from YOU, just in case they release. Many many other Homesteading activities can be dangerous too. You really need the directions the manufacturer wrote for your model of pressure canner, and you need to take the pressure setting and processing times from a recent reliable source to be as safe as you can be. Many years ago we used to raise a couple of steers every year.

Earthonaut. Simply Self Sufficiency. Phil and I were up early this morning and somewhere around 5:00 a.m. the power went out. Apparently someone had hit a pole which required the pole to be replaced but hadn't knocked off the power. The power company put up a new pole and we only lost power while they switched the lines to it. I hope the person who hit the pole wasn't hurt. It was so early that I have to wonder if they fell asleep at the wheel. I was up anyway so started on the green beans that I got yesterday. I learned that two pounds of green beans is a whole lot of green beans. I canned them in pint jars (20 minutes) and got 9 pints and then another quart bag full.

I also got a couple pounds of fresh raw peanuts yesterday. As you can see these went in the crock pot to boil with a good bit of salt and a few dried hot peppers. I am going to go out in a little while and plant the last long bed with a row of red torpedo onions, red Russian kale and probably some garlic. Food Storage for Beginners. For a while now, I’ve been playing around with a “No-Knead” bread recipe. Baking your own bread does NOT have to be that much work. In fact, it can be both fun and rewarding. If you are watching what you eat, baking your own bread is one of the few ways to really have control over what goes in it. That way, you can keep out corn syrup, dough conditioners, preservatives, and other things that would be best to go without. Two tricks are required that make this recipe work so well. I’m not going in-depth here on the whole recipe and technique, I already cover that in the YouTube video embedded at the top of this post. Tagged as: bread, dough, dutch oven, pot. I have a confession to make...I've always made above the average income for most Americans, and althought we weren't wealthy, we had alot of financial freedom that many families don't have. Every so often I go on a frugality bender in which I become quietly obsessed with spending less money than before. The trigger for this latest bender is the end of our busy season. Sales at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival weren’t as high as we'd hoped (the weather wasn’t cooperative) and since we depend on those sales to get us through the winter, we’ll be tightening our collective belts for the next several months. This is nothing unusual; it’s happened before.

Over the years of self-employment, we were forced into becoming students of thrift. When we started our home woodcraft business nineteen years ago, we had no choice: we could either be thrifty and work at home, or we could spend money and find a 9-to-5 job. We chose to be thrifty. We've remained so ever since. Recently I came across a frugality-related blog with an entry dating to 2006 in which the blogger listed 25 ways she saves money.
