It’s getting toward the end of the year, which in the music industry means two things: big commercial releases and a precipitous drop-off in quality as the “festive” season draws closer. It’s not all bad, though. In amongst the stocking stuffers and superfluous best-ofs, there are still some quality releases, and as we do at the start of every month, we’ve pored over the release schedules to pick out ten of the best. As ever, we’ve also rounded up everything else of note that’s out this month — the promising, the forbidding, and the stuff to be thankful you’ll never have to hear again. M.I.A. — Matangi (November 5) Well, at last.

The album is streaming right now, after it leaked earlier today, and first impressions are that at the very least, it’s a whole lot better than MAYA was — it’s leaner, meaner and generally more reminiscent of its creator’s pre-truffle fries days. Motley Crue Biopic Taps 'Jackass' Director. ‘Dirt,’ the big-screen version of Motley Crue‘s autobiography, just found its director. Jeff Tremaine, fresh from work on the just-released hit ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa,’ will be behind the cameras starting early next year, reports Deadline. The movie will be based on the band’s mega-popular 2001 autobiography ‘The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band,’ which chronicles the rise of the Crue during the crazy ’80s Los Angeles music scene. According to Deadline, ‘Dirt’ will be about “big hair, big sound, big money, big brawls, scandals and debauchery, and the inevitable big problems caused by drugs, drink, and living and breathing the rock-and-roll lifestyle as the quartet rose from playing local clubs on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip to touring the world as global rock stars.”

Tremaine learned how to direct working with the ‘Jackass’ crew back in the ’90s. “Rock stars have a swagger,” Tremaine tells Deadline. Next: Top 10 Motley Crue Songs. Jimi Hendrix, 'Hear My Train a Comin'' - Film Review. Up until now, Jimi Hendrix‘s life hasn’t been all that well documented on film. There have been plenty of concert movies featuring mostly hazy and grainy footage of the guitar great onstage, and a few documentaries hoping to peel away the man from the myth, but there’s never been a definitive work about the artist and his legend. ‘Hear My Train a Comin,’ a two-hour documentary simultaneously releasing on home video and airing on PBS as part of its ‘American Masters’ series, is a nuts-and-bolts Hendrix history for the uninitiated as well as for fans. Framed in a tidy narrative that even your grandparents can follow, ‘Hear My Train a Comin” succeeds where other Hendrix bios have failed because of the wealth of concert footage, home movies and vintage pics made available to the filmmakers by Hendrix’s family, which is 100 percent behind the project (unlike the upcoming big-screen biopic starring OutKast‘s Andre Benjamin).

He had a record label called Barking Pumpkin and his favorite holiday was Halloween. From 1977 until he stopped performing, Zappa and whatever Mothers of Invention he was touring with at the time, made a stop at New York’s Palladium Theater on 14th Street, the same venue where The Clash’s Paul Simonon smashed up his bass (as seen on the cover of London Calling) and that was reborn as the Palladium nightclub (home of Club MTV) and later NYU student dorms… First up, the 1977 show as recorded by radio’s King Biscuit Flower Hour: The marathon (nearly four hours) 10/31/1978 show from that year’s Palladium run: In 1981, MTV did a live simulcast of Zappa’s Halloween show from The Palladium:

Foo Fighters announce live comeback details. October 31, 2013 12:42 Band will perform with The National in Mexico on December 13 Foo Fighters will make their live comeback at a gig in Mexico in December, it has been confirmed. The band will perform a headline show at Mexico City's 55,000-capacity Foro Sol stadium on December 13, with The National providing support on the night. Foo Fighters' last gig was in New York in September 2012 at the Global Festival event.

Earlier this year, Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett revealed that the band are planning to begin recording their new album early next year (2014). Dave Grohl also recently confirmed that the album, the band's follow-up to 2011's 'Wasting Light', has now been written and hinted at a 2014 release date.

"It's a little way off," Grohl explained, talking to XFM in August. Shiflett subsequently echoed Grohl's comments by telling Rolling Stone: "We actually just started making a new Foo Fighters record within the last few weeks. Foo Fighters announce live comeback details. Slash Won't Rule Out Guns N' Roses Reunion. While Slash and Axl Rose have had a very tumultuous relationship (if you can even call not talking to each other a ‘relationship’) in the years since Slash parted ways with Guns N’ Roses, the guitarist won’t rule out the idea of a reunion at some point.

On a new episode of the ‘Larry King Now’ online show, Slash sat down with Larry King to discuss his career and of course, the one question that always seems to be raised in one form or another: “Is there a possibility that you’ll all get together one day?” Slash took his time formulating an answer, saying, “That’s the $64,000 question.” He continued, “It’s not something that any of us have reached out to each other and said that we wanted to do thus far. So, rather than be a pessimist and say, ‘No, it’ll never happen,’ it’s not like I’m harboring a lot of resentment. But it’s just not something that we’re all thinking about doing.”

He wrapped it up, leaving the door open to the idea, saying, “So if it happens one day, it happens. 12 Great Covers of Lou Reed Songs. One of the greatest homages one musician can pay another is to perform one of their songs. As this list of Lou Reed covers demonstrates, the Velvet Underground and solo star was clearly one of the most respected and covered songwriters in all of rock music. The wide range of acts he and his work have inspired — and the variety of shapes they successfully bend and twist his songs into — speaks volumes about his talent. Here then are but a mere handful of interpretations of Reed classics, from the Velvet Underground days through his solo recordings. 'Waiting For The Man' / 'Heroin' Recorded live in 1974, this medley from Cheap Trick of 'Waiting For The Man' and 'Heroin' may come as a surprise to some. In 1972, David Bowie was busy saving the careers of Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and Mott The Hoople.

Bowie's love for Lou Reed was always shouted loud and proud, especially during the Ziggy Stardust era. How do you get from New York to L.A. by way of Detroit? 'Venus In Furs' Monster Magnet 'Perfect Day' Top 10 Van Halen Songs. There’s never been a better straight-up, good-time rock and roll band than the original Van Halen. The group’s best songs struck a perfect balance between the wink-nudge lyricism and flamboyant, hyper-masculine persona of frontman David Lee Roth and the serious, groundbreaking musicianship of guitarist Eddie Van Halen. Not only were the band members great musicians and performers, they were also better songwriters than most of their hard rock contemporaries, capable of producing material that married a strong sense of songcraft with radio-friendly arrangements.

The balance between Roth’s bravado and Eddie Van Halen’s musical invention is evident in nearly all of the group’s best tracks — as you’ll see in our list of the Top 10 Van Halen Songs. 'Eruption' From 'Van Halen' (1978) Eddie Van Halen re-invented modern rock guitar playing with this instrumental track from Van Halen's debut album. 'Romeo Delight' From 'Woman and Children First' (1980) Warner Bros. 'On Fire' 'Little Guitars' 'Panama' AC/DC Lineup Changes: A Complete Guide. AC/DC‘s musical formula hasn’t changed much over the years, and for good reason: For 40 years and counting, Australia’s loudest musical exports have decisively proven that you don’t need much more than a couple of guitars, a couple of chords and a dirty mind to make great rock ‘n’ roll. But while the band’s sound has remained steady over the decades, the names and faces behind the music have undergone their share of turnover, and that’s where this installment of Lineup Changes comes in.

We’re taking a chronological look at the ins and outs of life in AC/DC, from their earliest days as struggling unknowns to their current status as one of the reigning kingpins of rock. King Crimson. Deadpieshop. Live Nation. 10 Best Metal Concept Albums. Concept albums can be a tough undertaking, as they leave a band with two difficult tasks — tell an interesting story and record some kick-ass songs. What these albums do is transcend the realm of music, weaving a story into their musical fabric and into the minds of listeners. In what can certainly be a daunting task, many bands have executed this album style to the point of near perfection. Here, we’ve defined a concept album as having a plot, characters, and a setting. Albums with a general theme, like war among other things, get lumped into the concept category, but we are putting those albums aside in favor of ones that serve up a true musical narrative.

Saxon Interviewed By 1013 Music Reviews.Com (Video) 1013MusicReviews.com conducted an interview with British heavy metal legends SAXON on September 24 in Waterloo, Iowa. You can now watch the chat below. "Unplugged And Strung Up", SAXON's selection of unique, fresh and adventurous interpretations of material previously heard only with raw heavy metal thunder, will be released on November 18.

The effort reveals layers and pieces previously dormant in many of the 14 classic SAXON songs chosen for this makeover, thanks to some ear-catching new arrangements and mixes. Recorded, mixed and mastered with Andy Sneap in Derbyshire, U.K. earlier this year, "Unplugged And Strung Up" contains re-evaluated, re-worked and re-energized versions of "The Eagle Has Landed" and "Crusader" by introducing orchestral dynamics to offer added dimension. The standard single CD of "Unplugged And Strung Up" will come in a jewel case, and a double-vinyl gatefold sleeve version of the release will also be available.

Well, throughout the month, we’ll have artist interviews as well as mini-documentaries about metal, metal fans and the birthplace of the genre.

And book reports: reading is fundamental, even for headbangers, and we’ll have reviews of some of the best recent books about metal. Google “Rob Zombie” and you’ll notice that the word “Halloween” is not far from the top of suggested search terms. “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” Zombie tells Radio.com. Of course, for Rob Zombie, nearly every day is Halloween. “I never had a moment where I thought the visuals are important–it never even crossed my mind that they weren’t important,” he said. White Zombie came out of a scene that didn’t pack a huge visual punch: the New York art scene of the mid-’80s that also included Sonic Youth and Live Skull. “The puppy rescue: it’s a funny name,” he admits. Dave Grohl And Krist Novoselic Share Memories, Unreleased Tracks From Nirvana's 'In Utero' : All Songs Considered. Hide captionNirvana in 1993 (from left): Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl. Anton Corbijn Few bands ever reach the popularity, influence and status of the early-'90s rock group Nirvana. Anyone who's old enough to remember knows that the trio from Aberdeen, Wash., helped pioneer grunge rock. But more than that, Nirvana became a symbol for an entire generation of ideas and popular culture, from fashion and art to our collective conversations about the way young people were making sense of the world back then, and how they saw their place in it. Remarkably, Nirvana did all this in a very short period of time, from about 1987 to 1994, and only released three albums during that period.

The last one the band released — about a year before singer Kurt Cobain took his own life — celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Gene Simmons Calls Peter Criss and Ace Frehley 'Drunks' and 'Losers' It may not be pretty, but if you ask Kiss‘ Gene Simmons a question, you can pretty much always count on a direct answer. Simmons’ recent chat with Rolling Stone — supposedly scheduled to promote the new Kiss book ‘Nothin’ to Lose‘ — was full of brutally forthright responses to a wide (and occasionally fairly inane) variety of questions, including the matter of whether or not he agrees with being portrayed as “the bad guy” in the dismissals of original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley.

“I am the bad guy,” responded Simmons. “I won’t stand for drunks and alcoholics who get up on stage and consider it their birthright. I consider it a privilege to get up there and arrive on time and be sober, and I’ll be an a–hole to anybody who thinks otherwise. You know who else is an a–hole? While it’s never fun to be branded a loser, Criss and Frehley can at least take comfort in knowing that, in Simmons’ mind, they’re only two of many. Next: Top 10 Kiss Songs of the 1970s.
