These changes take form in technological innovations, socio-economic shifts, political uncertainties, cultural developments, and climatic and ecological divergence. The resulting storms of excitement, fear and anxiety have stimulated the development of new constructs in the social and applied sciences, notably the concept of resilience. Developed first in relation to biological and ecological systems, resilience is generally understood as the ability of something or someone to return to a stable state from an anomalous one. On Saturday 8 April 2017 at 11am, we task you to write some original science fiction using elements we give you. Your story should not exceed 2000 words and you only have 48 hours: the best story we receive will be published on New Scientist's website and the author will receive £500 and a VIP pass to this year's festival which runs in London from 27 April to 6 May 2017. We didn't have much when I was growing up, so from a young age, I was always making things: drawings of people, high-heeled shoes out of cardboard. I came from Germany to London to study painting at Camberwell, but was encouraged to go into stage design. I went on to Central St Martins, and things just fell into place: I'd seen some inspiring plays and knew I didn't want to be the kind of artist who spends a lot of time alone. You started out designing for film. Why the move into theatre? At first, I was upset about leaving film. Do you suffer for your art? I have the odd sleepless night. 2017 Design for Next ... Paola Antonelli. Paola Antonelli is an Italian-born curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and one of the world’s foremost experts on contemporary architecture and design.

She received her MA in Architecture from Milan Polytechnic in 1990, and worked at the design magazines Domus and Abitare before coming to MoMA in 1994. At MoMA, where serves as curator for the Department of Architecture and Design, Antonelli has been a strong of advocate of treating design as art: she’s written that "everything is designed, one way or another.” Antonelli is known for her eclecticism, and has curated well-received shows such as Workspheres (2001), devoted to the workplace of the near future.
