Photo courtesy Cristina Rumbaitis del Rio At the opening of the Rising Currents exhibition at MoMA, curator Barry Bergdoll used the word “glocal” to describe the impact of this exhibition.

At first I thought I misheard, but then I realized he meant that the exhibition was part of the growing global grassroots movement to address the impact of climate change with smart, local solutions. Local governments and civil society groups around the world are starting to “Ask the Climate Question” about what differences in everyday decisions it will take to make their communities more resilient in the face of climate change impacts. Turning iPhone’s Gestures Into Quirky, Touchable Sculptures. A decade ago, the language didn’t even exist. Flicking, swiping, and pinch-to-zooming were all miracles the first time you tried them. Now, they’re a collection of verbs that your daily life couldn’t live without. Gabriele Meldaikyte is a student at London’s Royal College of Art. As a master’s project, she created Multi-Touch Gestures, which captures the physical movements behind the iPhone’s famous gestures in a series of quirky, mechanical machines built from acrylic and wood.

“I believe that in ten years or so these gestures will completely change,” Meldaikyte writes. “Therefore, my aim is to perpetuate them so they become accessible for future generations.” It’s a disconcerting thought, but any touchscreen gesture really is but a firmware update (or court order) away from eradication. Pinch-to-zoom is powered by an ingenious scissorlike lever, which moves a magnifying glass up and down. Meldaikyte’s work sits in an interesting place. See more here. An art fair is not the best place to discover works related to science, technology or politics. And when there are indeed such works on offer, they are not easy to spot.

Galleries exhibiting at art fairs don't usually accompany the artwork with a text explaining what the piece is about. In fact, several galleries don't even write down the name of the artists they exhibit. You have to go and ask them. Which i do when i'm desperate but most of the time, i just want to keep on walking from gallery to gallery (there were 172 of them this year at Artissima) and see the rest of the show before my head explodes. I did however, spot a few gems at the latest edition of Artissima. Taisia Korotkova, Delivery Simulator. Taisia Korotkova, In Vitro Fertilisation laboratory. Taisia Korotkova, Models The paintings of Taisia Korotkova immediately got my attention.

Korotkova paints her modern icons in the technique of traditional icon painting in tempera with a dip of humanized social realist painting. Co.Exist: World changing ideas and innovation.
