There is More to iPads in the Classroom Than Apps  In a previous post, Evaluating Apps with Transformative Use of the iPad in Mind, I describe my ambivalence about teacher asking my for the “perfect” app to teach this or that. I have teachers ask me frequently about app recommendations for different subject areas.“What app could I use to teach subtraction?”“What app would you recommend for my students to practice writing?”“I want to use iPads in my Science class. What app is good for that?” Typeset In The Future The opening credits for Alien are nothing short of a typographic masterpiece. You can watch them in their entirety on the Art Of The Title web site, but here's the general gist: a slow, progressive disclosure of a disjointed, customized Futura reveals the movie's central theme over 90 seconds of beautifully-spaced angular lettering. UPDATE: Susan Bradley (and others) have pointed out that this is much more like Helvetica Black than Futura. I'd based my original claim on Art Of The Title's interview with the creators, despite a mismatch when I checked it against Futura myself. However, after a detailed comparison with Helvetica Black, I tend to agree with Susan. Thank you for the correction!

Promoting Multiple Literacies (Principles of New Librarianship) In my last post, I outlined 5 principles that I believe new librarianship encompasses. Today, I’m going to delve into the first principle a little further: promoting multiple literacies. Which literacies should new librarianship promote? How are the literacies inter-related? And how can they be promoted? The game machine W2L Info Published on December 1st, 2013 | by What2Learn Are you looking to make your own study game? No-Fear Homemade Mayonnaise: Better Than What's In The Jar Chef Simon Hopkinson says mayonnaise is a total pleasure to make, but people are often frightened to try to make it themselves. In some cases, this resulted in comic strips that had very nice pictures, but weren't all that funny (cough, Blondie). Thankfully, the Internet has taught us not to accept an inferior form of comic artistry, but a more flexible one. Comic strip enthusiasts who want funny but don't care about pretty drawing can have their strips, those who want artistry have theirs, and even those with very specific tastes can find something just right.

What, How and for Whom (eds.): Dear Art (2012) 28 November 2012, dusan “Dear art,” Mladen Stilinović wrote in 1999, “I am writing you a love letter to cheer you up and encourage you to come and visit me some time”. Always acutely aware of his own complicity and involvement, in his address to art Stilinović intimates a set of troubled, poetic, enigmatic and modest observations on the standing of art in the contemporary world, its reception and distribution. But he also questions the value of art, which far too often is translated exclusively in monetary terms, or as he puts it: “quick manipulation, quick money, quick oblivion”. As in several previous shows curated by What, How and for Whom/WHW, Dear Art takes its title from a work by Mladen Stilinović, and once again its wager is set on the “classical” exhibition format. “Dear Art” approaches questions of the artist’s autonomy and art’s necessity through works that deliberately blur the relationship between engagement, self-referentiality and aesthetics.
