A vegetarian diet is better for the environment Eating a vegetarian diet is one of the best things you can do to stop climate change – it’s also delicious and loads of fun! The population is set to rise to over 9 billion by 20501, we are consuming the planet’s natural resources faster than the Earth can replenish them. Death notes: Mapping the world’s mortality - Geographical Magazine With global life expectancy rising continuously and fertility rates falling steadily, the world’s population is slowly ageing. Both trends have led to a shift in the age at which people are dying. In 2015, approximately 8.5 per cent of the world’s population was estimated to be aged 65 and above. The Global Burden of Disease study has become a major milestone project in analysing and better understanding global health trends.

History of Pandemics: Timeline Plague of Justinian/ Yersinia pestis, 541-544 This is the first of three plague pandemics. It was first reported in the ancient city of Pelusium, Egypt, and affected much of the Mediterranean basin (Hays, 2005). The historian John of Ephesus claimed that in the city of Constantinople, there were 5000 – 10000 deaths daily, possibly reaching a total death toll of 300,000 (Hays, 2005). Epidemics continued for the next two centuries, resulting in over 25 million deaths (Rosen, 2008). This pandemic was named after the then Byzantine emperor Justinian I, and this name is usually used to refer to the entire two century period.

This post has been updated based on the new things I’ve learned about these images since posting the original article.] I was doing some work for a colleague at the Family Leadership Design Collaborative, and she gave me a challenge: redesign the “equity vs. equality” graphic that’s been circulating on the web. You’ve probably come across a version of this graphic yourself.

Dramatic health learning > Anglican Overseas Aid Our ‘Towards Abundant Life’ program in Mozambique aims to build community resourcefulness to reach their health and wellbeing goals. ANCP Program Manager, Vanessa Little, recently witnessed how the project was positively changing the way couples approach family planning. The Equipa de Vida volunteers share their health knowledge with their communities. Family planning is not usually a primary focus in our projects, however the Towards Abundant Life program, funded through the Australian Government’s ANCP matching grant program, gives the community the freedom to tackle health issues that they feel are important. Speaking to the women in the region of Nampula about the work, Vanessa could clearly see that the positive impact of family planning education extends beyond just the lives of women; it also strengthens their families and the community as a whole. Actors in a theatre performance led by an Equipa de Vida team demonstrate family planning principles.

Commission on the Status of Women - UNCSW Follow us on: The Commission's mandate was expanded in 1987 by ECOSOC resolution 1987/22 to include the functions of promoting the objectives of equality, development and peace, monitoring the implementation of measures for the advancement of women, and reviewing and appraising progress made at the national, subregional, regional and global levels. Marlon James: Why I'm Done Talking About Diversity You’d think with the rise of Donald Trump in the US, Marine Le Pen in France, the newly energized Neo-Nazi and KKK movements, and with people from all over the world (but particularly Europe) suddenly emboldened to be public with their racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia, that now would be the perfect time to raise the banner high for diversity. Now would be the time to have discussions, and raise awareness. And yet now seems like the perfect time to stop talking about it.

The report presents the yearly assessment of global and regional progress towards the MDGs. With the deadline for the MDGs on the horizon, this year's report examines where the targets have been met and where redoubled efforts are needed urgently to accelerate the progress. It also reveals that our attention needs to focus on disparities across geographical areas and population groups within countries. The report is based on comprehensive official statistics compiled by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on MDG indicators led by the Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
