Olivier het reeds in 2010 die nasionale media gehaal toe hy ’n ruk in die informele nedersetting Makotoko buite Bloemfontein in ’n plakkershut saam met verarmde inwoners gebly het waar geen water, elektrisiteit of basiese dienste beskikbaar was nie.

The rural development and land reform deputy minister, Lechesa Tsenoli, has urged the communities of Mangaung and the surrounding areas to take a leaf out of the book of the Qala Tala greening project, which promotes sustainable living practices in the smallest of spaces.

Qala Tala is a pro-active social initiative based on collaboration that seeks to address core issues related to the creation of sustainable human settlement and poverty alleviation, through the establishment of 40 to 50 hanging and sky vegetable gardens. The project was pioneered by Thabo Olivier in partnership with Centre for Development Support at the University of the Free State (UFS), Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) and national rural development and land reform department. During his visit to the Qala Tala project in Bloemfontein, Tsenoli said the project seeks to maintain a balance between environmental cleanliness and poverty alleviation. “This is called the sky-garden. A lecturer at Free State University’s Centre for Development Support, Anita Venter, says the project is part of a bigger informal settlement upgrade project being undertaken in Mangaung this month. “We are networking a lot with the Central University of Technology (CUT) to get their Built-Environment Department involved. They have invited us to come and give them a presentation on what we want to achieve,” says Venter. She is also co-founder of Qala Tala (or Green Start) an initiative that aims to promote sustainability by encouraging collaboration in the Free State to seek better ways of co-existing with the environment by for example, seeking alternative energy sources.
