Skim Milk: Steamer Set by Office for Product Design for JIA Inc.

Steaming food has been at the core of traditional Chinese cooking, but the Chinese steamer has hardly seen any change to its aesthetic, until now. This new rendition reinterprets the classic steamer into a modernized and functional design. Made of fire-proof ceramic, the steamer is less susceptible to temperature changes than regular stoneware. The steamer can be used inside an oven, gas stove, or microwave without any risk to its composition. Terracotta material is also used for its liquid absorbing properties. The Extra ORdinary Objects by Jennifer Rabatel. Jennifer Rabatel is a product designer from France whose collection of The Extra ORdinary Objects was a way for her to turn basic objects into new things.

The Extra ORdinary Objects by Jennifer Rabatel

The result is four collections of items that are a bit quirky but most definitely creative and functional. Rabatel began with four simple items – a scraper, wrenches, a T-square, and an envelope, and here is what she came up with: Spatula Mirrors A set of mirrors inspired by paint scrapers – hand mirror, pocket mirror, wall mirror, and table mirror. T-square Hanger A foldable hanger for pants or a coat that was born from her daily use of a T-square and realizing it featured the perfect angle to hold a coat. Cactus Seating by Maurizio Galante. Would you believe you can sit on that?

Cactus Seating by Maurizio Galante

The cactus-printed sofa and footrest from Maurizio Galante for Cerruti Baleri, might just be the only cacti that won’t stick you. Galante printed an image of the prickly, spiny plant onto bi-elastic fabric to create the Canapé Cactus sofa and the matching Tattoo footrest. While at first glance you might hesitate to sit, you will actually find a cushy place to rest. Chair Farm. Projectdetails: Year: 2012 Account: Chair Farm Design: Werner Aisslinger Description: “Plant yourself a chair …” The chair farm concept is as simple as it is radical.

Chair Farm

A “plantation chair” produced in an agricultural Lab is an production utopia of the future... The chair is no longer produced in the classical sense of the word. A new way to invert production in furniture design back from globalized serial manufacturing to resource-conserving local production. Strawberries in winter, pumpkins in spring – everything is possible. Www.danishcrafts.org. HAN Gallery. FAN Table by Mauricio Affonso. The FAN Table by Mauricio Affonso easily transforms shapes and sizes with its innovative design.

FAN Table by Mauricio Affonso

The tabletop is made from more than 400 connected slats that expand and contract to create the shape you need, while the simple, geometric base that it sits on is constructed of birch wood. The cool thing about it is that it expands into a circle similar to a fan, hence the name. Just looking at the table in either the rectangular or circular form, you wouldn’t think that it would convert to the other – that is the brilliance of the design. Wool Felt iPad Sleeve from Grove. You already know how much I love Grove’s quality handmade-in-Portland products.

Wool Felt iPad Sleeve from Grove

I’ve had one of their engraved bamboo cases and now I have my hands on one of their new felt iPad sleeves. Oh happy day! This thing is all about the details; Charles Eames would be proud. Their new iPad sleeve is still fit for all the iPad generations, and can even be used with Apple’s Smart Cover. Made of wool felt and bamboo stitched together in avisible and exaggerated zig-zag stitch, this sleeve has an invisible magnetic closure, too.
