And while the finished rug has had a home in our playroom for a while, now I can give it the pattern a home here on Moogly! I hope you enjoy this great free crochet rug pattern! This pattern features Red Heart Vivid, an amazingly bright and bold yarn that’s crazy squishy! It’s a super bulky, and since I made this rug I’ve seen it at local big box yarn stores. If you can’t find it at a store near you, you can order it online from Red Heart, or substitute the super bulky yarn of your choice – or even hold 2-3 strands of worsted together!

In the four months we’ve had the Shocking Mandala Rug in our playroom it’s been the scene of epic Lego battles, a private tent, a turtle shell, and a safe warm place to land. They’re beautiful and fun to make, ranging from the sublimely simple to the excruciatingly complex. I was inspired to design my own, but I wanted it to have a practical purpose too. The Magic Spike Mandala is relatively simple, but spike stitches and shells combine to make it fun and fabulous.

:) So many of you were interested in the pattern for this mandala, that I decided to write it down for you all. The people have spoken! This pattern uses US terms and abbreviations. For a conversion chart to UK terms, look here. What do you need: yarn (I used Drops Paris cotton yarn by Garnstudio)a matching crochet hook (I used a 4mm Clover hook)a Tunisian crochet hook in the same size (so for me a 4mm Tunisian hook)a darning needle to sew in the endsa pair of scissors If you don’t have a Tunisian hook, you could also use a regular steel hook. Here we go! 1. Chain 2, and make 11 dc’s in the ring. Cut the yarn and pull through the loop on your hook, and pull the ring closed to make a circle.

Thread the yarn end through the needle and insert in the first dc you made, through both loops, skipping the ch2. Pull the needle through and now insert it in the back loop of the last stitch you made. 2. Little Spring Mandala Pattern.
