Some of these new features are mostly just fun, but a couple of others actually make the service easier to use and show a first glimpse at Google’s future plans for this service. Among the fun new features are 16 new sticker pages and a couple of Easter eggs (just type “woot” or “happy birthday” into a chat to see what those look like after you’ve installed the update).

On the visual side, you can also now apply filters to your video chats (think sepia, vignette, black and white, etc.). Those are fun little features, but what’s more important in this update is that Hangouts is also getting smarter. A Gift to Google+ on Its Third Birthday: No More Facebook Comparisons

Google didn't make any major announcements or release any special features to commemorate the moment. Google+ didn't even rate an appearance at Google I/O, the company's biggest tech conference, which wrapped up on Thursday. Google, for whatever reason, seems to be content to let the event pass. Carmack expressed his opinion on the acquisition in the comments section of a Tumblr post by Peter Berkman, a Brooklyn-based musician for electronic group Anamanaguchi. His most revealing note was that he wasn't expecting an acquisition this soon. "I wasn't personally involved in any of the negotiations — I spent an afternoon talking technology with Mark Zuckerberg, and the next week I find out that he bought Oculus," Carmack wrote. "Honestly, I wasn't expecting Facebook (or this soon). I have zero personal background with them, and I could think of other companies that would have more obvious synergies.
