Some of these new features are mostly just fun, but a couple of others actually make the service easier to use and show a first glimpse at Google’s future plans for this service. Among the fun new features are 16 new sticker pages and a couple of Easter eggs (just type “woot” or “happy birthday” into a chat to see what those look like after you’ve installed the update).

On the visual side, you can also now apply filters to your video chats (think sepia, vignette, black and white, etc.). Those are fun little features, but what’s more important in this update is that Hangouts is also getting smarter. When somebody now asks you where you are, Hangouts will automatically prompt you to share your location. Your contacts will also now show a “last seen” timestamp so it’s clear when somebody is online. How To Optimize Google My Business for Success. If you’re already a Google Plus pro, you know how powerful the platform can be as a community builder for your brand. The same goes for Google Local, Google Analytics and YouTube pros. In the past, however, being an expert on just one of these platforms hasn’t guaranteed competence with any of the others, let alone that you’d have the time and energy to manage all of them successfully. A Gift to Google+ on Its Third Birthday: No More Facebook Comparisons. Google+ turns 3 years old on Saturday, a birthday the service is celebrating with little fanfare (if at all).

A Gift to Google+ on Its Third Birthday: No More Facebook Comparisons

Google didn't make any major announcements or release any special features to commemorate the moment. Google+ didn't even rate an appearance at Google I/O, the company's biggest tech conference, which wrapped up on Thursday. Google, for whatever reason, seems to be content to let the event pass. The birthday is just happening: another year older, another year wiser. That's why I believe Google+ deserves a special gift from the rest of us: Let's stop comparing it to Facebook. For three years, we've been trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Part of the problem is our perception of Google+. Google+ is many things: a username and password combo that identifies you across a number of Google-related products, a profile page where you engage with your friends, a limitless possibility of creative, highly specialized Circles to join. Carmack expressed his opinion on the acquisition in the comments section of a Tumblr post by Peter Berkman, a Brooklyn-based musician for electronic group Anamanaguchi. His most revealing note was that he wasn't expecting an acquisition this soon. "I wasn't personally involved in any of the negotiations — I spent an afternoon talking technology with Mark Zuckerberg, and the next week I find out that he bought Oculus," Carmack wrote. "Honestly, I wasn't expecting Facebook (or this soon). I have zero personal background with them, and I could think of other companies that would have more obvious synergies. Carmack was hired as Oculus VR's CTO in August, though he has been involved with the company since its early days.

Google+ Pages Show Total Profile, Post and Photo Views. In an effort to shrug off its “ghost town” reputation, Google today updated Google+ with total content views for profiles and pages.

Google+ Pages Show Total Profile, Post and Photo Views

On any page, you’ll notice the new figure underneath the user’s profile photo, just next to where their follower count is displayed. It includes the total number of views for their posts, photos and profile page. Clearly, this is a move to prove once and for all what the level of user engagement is like on Google+. Of course, that number will fluctuate depending on how many followers you have, how often you publish and the popularity of your posts. Nevertheless, it’s an important metric which could prove the success or failure of the social network – and also indicate whether brands should persevere with it. Finally, it’s worth noting that you can hide this figure at any time under your Google+ account settings, with the check-box labeled “show how many times your profile and content have been viewed.”
