Synapse. Synapse. There are two fundamentally different types of synapses: In a chemical synapse, electrical activity in the presynaptic neuron is converted (via the activation of voltage-gated calcium channels) into the release of a chemical called a neurotransmitter that binds to receptors located in the plasma membrane of the postsynaptic cell. The neurotransmitter may initiate an electrical response or a secondary messenger pathway that may either excite or inhibit the postsynaptic neuron. Chemical synapses can be classified according to the neurotransmitter released: glutamatergic (excitatory), GABAergic (inhibitory), cholinergic (e.g. vertebrate neuromuscular junction) and adrenergic (releasing norepinephrine). Synaptic communication is distinct from ephaptic coupling, in which communication between neurons occurs via indirect electric fields.

Specialized synapses[edit] For technical reasons, synaptic structure and function has mainly been studied at unusually large 'model' synapses, for example: File:Chemical synapse schema cropped.jpg. The top-like rotation of the earth on its axis is how we define the day. The revolution of the earth around the sun is how we define the year. We all learn in grade school that the planets move at differing rates around the sun. Why the huge differences in periods? The mere act of observation can completely change the outcome of an event! Before I get too ahead of myself, you need to watch the video below to understand: (Forgive the corny cartoon character explaining the concept — at least he knows his stuff) Recap: When a camera observed the electrons, they acted as particles. However, when the no equipment was used to observe the electrons, they acted as waves and particles simultaneously. So what’s the reason for this? Want even further proof? Then in 2002, a group of researchers set up the experiment in a way that the electron could not possibly receive information about the existence of an observing instrument.

The Results: The photons acted like particles 93% of the time that they were observed. What are the implications of this? 1. 2. 3. What other implications did you get out of these experiments? Awesome milk trick!. FutureofScience_Map_lg.jpg (JPEG Image, 1998 × 1332 pixels)
