Matlet.

Clever student: I know!

Now we just plug in x=0, and we see that zero to the zero is one! Cleverer student: No, you’re wrong! You’re not allowed to divide by zero, which you did in the last step. Which is true since anything times 0 is 0. Cleverest student : That doesn’t work either, because if then is so your third step also involves dividing by zero which isn’t allowed! And see what happens as x>0 gets small. So, since = 1, that means that High School Teacher: Showing that approaches 1 as the positive value x gets arbitrarily close to zero does not prove that . Is undefined. Wolfram MathWorld: The Web's Most Extensive Mathematics Resource. Exploring Multivariable Calculus. Welcome to Exploring Multivariable Calculus!

This website is dedicated to exploring calculus visually using the computer. In particular, it's focused on helping you explore multivariable calculus and some three-dimensional topics within single variable calculus. (In the left panel, you will find a link to another area of my website that is focused on single variable calculus as well as a link to my instructor home page.) This web project is being developed with support from the National Science Foundation under the grant, DUE-CCLI 0736968. In the left panel, you will also find a link to the main Multivariable Exploration applet and links to various focused applets in this collection. Why use visualizations like those found here to explore multivariable calculus? As an instructor, I often found it difficult to draw the three-dimensional concepts clearly on the chalkboard, and found myself waving my hands to try to get students to see what I was seeing.

Wonders of Math - The Game of Life. What is the Game of Life?

By Paul Callahan Rules of the Game of Life Life is played on a grid of square cells--like a chess board but extending infinitely in every direction. A cell can be live or dead. A live cell is shown by putting a marker on its square. A dead cell is shown by leaving the square empty. To apply one step of the rules, we count the number of live neighbors for each cell. A dead cell with exactly three live neighbors becomes a live cell (birth). Note: The number of live neighbors is always based on the cells before the rule was applied. In Life, as in nature, we observe many fascinating phenomena. The rules described above are all that's needed to discover anything there is to know about Life, and we'll see that this includes a great deal. Life Patterns A good way to get started in Life is to try out different patterns and see what happens. The R-pentomino is the first pattern Conway found that defied his attempts to simulate by hand.

By Glen Whitney for the Museum of Mathematics Math Mondays have so far featured a wide array of different items from which one can make a tremendous variety of geometric constructions, but there has not yet been one on hula hoops.

This week and next we’ll remedy that oversight. Also, the postings so far have almost entirely shown the constructions as fait accompli, so this series will also try to give a bit of insight into the process of devising a new creation. First, why hula hoops? They’re a pretty cheap source of large, pre-made circles, generally decently symmetric and strong. Assignment: can you do the same thing with six hula hoops? For a recent event, MoMath wanted a large-scale public construction activity, so based on our success with hula hoops to date, designer Tim Nissen envisioned a gigantic pyramid of hoops — here’s the initial conception: We even managed to combine four of the order-1 units into an order-2 tetrahedron pretty nicely: To be continued… Math Learning Disabilities. By: Kate Garnett (1998) While children with disorders in mathematics are specifically included under the definition of Learning Disabilities, seldom do math learning difficulties cause children to be referred for evaluation.

In many school systems, special education services are provided almost exclusively on the basis of children's reading disabilities. Even after being identified as learning disabled (LD), few children are provided substantive assessment and remediation of their arithmetic difficulties. This relative neglect might lead parents and teachers to believe that arithmetic learning problems are not very common, or perhaps not very serious.
