Oceans: Plastic Pollution. One of the most serious threats to our oceans is plastics pollution. Plastic constitutes approximately 90% of all trash floating on the ocean’s surface, with 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile. Why is there so much plastic in the ocean? Unlike other types of trash, plastic does not biodegrade; instead, it photo-degrades with sunlight, breaking down into smaller and smaller pieces, but they never really disappear.

These plastic pieces are eaten by marine life, wash up on beaches, or break down into microscopic plastic dust, attracting more debris. Plastic is also swept away by ocean currents, landing in swirling vortexes called ocean gyres. The North Pacific Gyre off the coast of California is home to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the largest ocean garbage site in the world. The floating mass of plastic is twice the size of Texas, with plastic pieces outnumbering sea life by a measure of 6 to 1. It takes 500-1000 years for plastic to degrade. Fast Facts. Google. Short Film Collection.

Green family living. Domes are common public structures, being used in government legislature buildings, sports complexes and religious buildings…even as covers for road salt. As homes, they are less common, although the igloo is a notable exception. And that’s too bad, because domes are incredibly strong structures that enclose a volume of space more economically than conventional architecture that is based on squares and rectangles.

In a dome, the roof and exterior walls are integrated into a continuous curved surface, which removes the need for the space- and material-wasting interior support walls and attic. Dome dwellers also enjoy more efficient and less expensive use of heating and cooling resources, since a dome’s decreased surface area allows less heat to escape in the winter and infiltrate in the summer, and air circulates naturally in a round structure. Geodesic Domes Bucky’s method of building a dome uses much less material and allows the spanning of greater distances than ever before. Learn More. (UK) Freecycle Groups. RecycleDevon.org. India's Waste-To-Energy Plan Could Mean Bad News For Trash Pickers. NEW DELHI -- Leaning on a battered set of scales while flies swarmed his piles of trash, Akbar said he wasn't demanding much: "All I want is continued access to waste.

" Akbar is one of an estimated quarter-million people in New Delhi who make their living in the informal world of garbage. While ragpickers go door-to-door collecting and sorting waste, Akbar, a 29-year-old who uses only one name, is a middleman who buys the most valuable trash and resells it to recyclers. Those whose survival depends on this gray market fear their lives are about to be upended. Where they see money in those mountains of garbage, the New Delhi government sees electricity. Desperate for cheap energy, the Delhi government is experimenting with power plants fueled by garbage. One plant is running on a trial basis and two more are under construction. Some who recycle 100 kilograms (220 pounds) daily can earn as much as $6 a day, but most earn about $4. Their lives are already difficult. Also on HuffPost: Big companies weaving green initiatives into corporate culture - Houston Business Journal.

Leo Espinoza, shelly Fust and Lisa L. Walker Special to Houston Business Journal Companies that weave sustainability capabilities into their organizational processes and culture are poised to profit. Advantages in cost savings, positive cultural changes and a boost in management development appear. This is similar to the way their forward-thinking predecessors succeeded during the quality revolution. Many large companies have instituted sustainability initiatives: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has reduced annual shipping container use by 500 units, preventing the consumption of 1,000 barrels of oil and 3,800 trees while netting $2.4 million in cost savings.

These and other early adopters in numerous industries benefit from sustainability initiatives by developing organizational structures and talent management approaches to minimize the risks and maximize the business opportunities. Program structure The most successful sustainability programs share several common structural characteristics: Overfishing. If global overfishing continues, wild fish populations will be further reduced, regardless of how many boats are used or what techniques are employed. Today, most of the world’s major commercially valuable fish populations are overfished , and the remainder is exploited at their maximum possible level. (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) In 1999, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimated that 70-78% of worldwide marine fish stocks require urgent intervention to prevent population declines and to help rebuild species depleted by over fishing.

In the waters surrounding the United States, the U.S. Department of Commerce listed 959 different fish stocks in the 2001 Annual Report to Congress on the Status of U.S. Fisheries. The wild fish in our oceans are the last wild creatures that people hunt on a global scale. One example occurred in the Chesapeake Bay when overfishing and other environmental toxins depleted the oysters.

Addressing the future

Natural Solutions. Water scarcity is a real threat. The next war ripping across continents may well be triggered by water scarcity. Already a third of the world is suffering from water shortages. Ironically, rainfall has been adequate. The water is there. But what has gone awry is its management. Water scarcity in Asia and Australia alone affects a fourth of the world’s population and is triggered by over-usage whereas in Africa, it is lack of adequate infrastructure that wreaks havoc. Water scarcity around the world has come about primarily due to quintessentially wasteful practices that have seeped into present-day agriculture which sadly mops up 80% of fresh water.

Over the past 100 years, water usage has gone up by six times globally, and is threatening to double again by the year 2050, driven mainly by demands of irrigation and increased agricultural activities. Interestingly rich nations like Australia are not immune to water scarcity. Land, water scarcity threaten food security: U.N. Water Scarcity Looms | Vital Signs Online. Water scarcity. Water's Scarcity Spells Opportunity for Entrepreneurs. Last week, Hydrovolts won the 2010 Imagine H2O prize, an annual competition established in 2007 to encourage innovation in water technology.

BlackGold was one of two runners-up. Both are poster children for the flourishing “blue tech” economy that is drawing innovators, entrepreneurs and investors into the water industry. “Water is mission critical in everything that we produce, eat, need, and underpins pretty well all economic development,” said David Henderson, a partner at XPV Capital in Toronto, a firm that focuses on water technology. According to a report last year, about 884 million people worldwide lack access to improved drinking water supplies and 2.6 billion lack access to basic sanitation. Developed countries, too, have water problems: Infrastructure is aging, causing leaks and pollution. Meanwhile, micropollutants are a growing hazard to health and the environment, the global population is rising and is making water supplies increasingly unpredictable. When people are panicked and desperate, that is the ideal time to push through their wishlist of pro-corporate policies: privatising education and social security, slashing public services, getting rid of the last constraints on corporate power. Amidst the economic crisis, this is happening the world over. There is only one thing that can block this tactic, and fortunately, it's a very big thing: the 99%. And that 99% is taking to the streets from Madison to Madrid to say: "No. We will not pay for your crisis. " That slogan began in Italy in 2008. Many people have drawn parallels between Occupy Wall Street and the so-called anti-globalisation protests that came to world attention in Seattle in 1999. But there are important differences too.
