I was invited by Akiko Kanna to contribute a design for an A1 poster for an exhibition titled ‘How Very Tokyo: British Designers Interpret Tokyo in Posters’.

For my contribution, I invited Akiko to instruct the printer to form a new poster by overprinting all the other posters contributed by the other invitees. Participants were asked to purchase items bearing legible (and removable) price tags that could be offered as gifts. (They were told that the items should serve as things people would enjoy receiving as presents.) Each participant brought his or her gift item to the gallery by a particular date where its price tag was carefully removed and re-applied in a random pattern on a single sheet of paper. By setting up an equivalence between palette and canvas, the project creates a compelling ambiguity between paint as a subject and paint as a medium. In addition to depicting the specific source and substance from which it is made, each work complicates assumed differences between abstraction and representation, image and object. Deceptively simple, the work is remarkable for all the complexities it proposes.

Seen initially at a distance, it is possible to consider the wall mounted canvases as abstract paintings, a reading that remains possible for some examples even at close range. Table Arrangements. For the duration of the opening the tapes gently fall to the gallery floor. The properties of the tape, weight verses strength of adhesive, determine the rate at which the tapes fall. Adhesive Tape Cascade (part two) the unraveled tape is cut, and the spools rehung in the sequenced they touched the gallery floor. ie. fastest to slowest. The process is repeated, until the tape runs out or the remaining tape is not heavy enough to fall to the floor, leaving the spool hanging. Arranged around… Book Shelf.
