To mark the recent passing of José Argüelles, we offer an excerpt from his upcoming book Manifesto for the Noosphere : The Next Stage in the Evolution of Human Consciousness , available from Evolver Editions/North Atlantic Books in October 2011. The noosphere, identified in the early twentieth century as intrinsic to the next stage of human and terrestrial evolution, is defined as the Earth’s “mental sphere” or stratum of human thought. the final work by renowned author José Argüelles, predicts that the noosphere will be fully accessed on December 21, 2012—but warns that we will only successfully make this evolutionary jump through an act of collective consciousness among humans on Earth. The ascension to the noosphere or Supermind (using the terminology of Sri Aurobindo), Argüelles says, will be an unprecedented “mind shift” that mirrors the emergence of life itself on the planet. {*style:<i> Manifesto for the Noosphere </i>*}is intended to inform and prepare humanity for the nature and magnitude of this shift. Argüelles brings in the Mayan long-count calendar, radical theories on the nature of time, advanced states of consciousness, and the possible intervention of galactic intelligence.

Arguelles, who styled himself Valum Votan, Closer of the Cycle and President of the Foundation for the Law of Time, claimed to have been inspired by calendars left in Central America by Maya Indians, who were in turn inspired by extraterrestrials from the Galactic Federation. The Mayans, he claimed, tell us we entered our current stage of evolution in 3113BC when the Earth and Sun began a long journey through an energy beam emanating from the Milky Way. In 2012, the solar system would leave the beam: “As the year 2012 approaches, the planet will be humming and vibrating as never before,” Arguelles wrote in The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology (1987). He wanted a “critical mass” of 144,000 New Age believers to gather at sacred sites such as Mount Olympus, the Egyptian pyramids, the Dead Sea and San Francisco Bay to witness the new dawn.
José Argüelles , born Joseph Anthony Arguelles ( / ɑr ˈ ɡ w eɪ . ɨ s / ; Rochester, Minnesota January 24, 1939 – March 23, 2011), [ 1 ] [ 2 ] was an American New Age author and artist. He was the founder of Planet Art Network and the Foundation for the Law of Time. He held a Ph.D. in Art History and Aesthetics from the University of Chicago and taught at numerous colleges, including Princeton University and the San Francisco Art Institute . He was the twin brother of poet Ivan Argüelles . As one of the originators of the Earth Day concept, Argüelles founded the first Whole Earth Festival in 1970, at Davis, California .

Omega Point is a term coined by the French Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881–1955) to describe a maximum level of complexity and consciousness towards which he believed the universe was evolving. In this theory, developed by Teilhard in The Future of Man (1950), the universe is constantly developing towards higher levels of material complexity and consciousness, a theory of evolution that Teilhard called the Law of Complexity/Consciousness .

Ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues! I would like to begin my presentation with expression of my gratitude to the organizers of the Second Planetary Congress on the Bio-Sphere Rights and to the Foundation of the Time Law for the possibility to address this audience. I came from Moscow, Russia in order to tell you about the Noosphere Spiritual Ecological World Assembly, (World Assembly, NSEWA) , of which I have the honour to be a President. I represented NSEWA in a lot if international forums, including the Global Forum of the Earth of the Summit on Sustainable Development (Rio + 10) in Johannesburg (2002), at different conferences held in the framework of World Exhibition EXPO-2005 in Japanese Nagoya (2005) and in other forums.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin SJ ( French: [pjɛʁ tejaʁ də ʃaʁdɛ̃] ; May 1, 1881 – April 10, 1955) was a French philosopher and Jesuit priest who trained as a paleontologist and geologist and took part in the discovery of Peking Man and Piltdown Man . [ 1 ] Teilhard conceived the idea of the Omega Point (a maximum level of complexity and consciousness towards which he believed the universe was evolving) and developed Vladimir Vernadsky 's concept of Noosphere .
Roger Nelson is Director of the IONS-sponsored Global Consciousness Project (GCP) , an international collaboration of scientists, artists, and citizens interested in the extraordinary aspects of human consciousness. He also coordinates research in the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) laboratory at Princeton University. Nelson's professional training is in experimental psychology and psychophysiology, supplemented by a background in physics, statistical methods, engineering, sculpture, electronic music, and multi-media production.
