Facebook Releases Data, Including All National Security Requests. By Ted Ullyot, Facebook General Counsel Over the last week, in press statements as well as Mark’s post last Friday, we’ve repeatedly called for governments worldwide to be willing to provide more details about programs aimed at keeping the public safe. We’ve also urged them to allow companies to divulge appropriate information about government orders and requests that we receive, in a manner that does not compromise legitimate security concerns. Requests from law enforcement entities investigating national security-related cases are by their nature classified and highly sensitive, and the law traditionally has placed significant constraints on the ability of companies like Facebook to even confirm or acknowledge receipt of these requests – let alone provide details of our responses.

We’ve reiterated in recent days that we scrutinize every government data request that we receive – whether from state, local, federal, or foreign governments. Facebook: Releasing your personal data reveals our trade secrets. Update: I followed up with both organizations. See Facebook: The law reasonably states you can't have all your data and Europe versus Facebook: The law protects program logic, not data. An Austrian group called Europe versus Facebook has so far made 22 complaints regarding the social network's practices.

In the process, the organization has stumbled upon an important tidbit: Facebook says it is not required to give you a copy of some of your personal data if it deems doing so would adversely affect its trade secrets or intellectual property. On its website, Europe versus Facebook shows how to request a copy of your personal data on the social network. It explains that because of Ireland's 1988 Data Protection Act (DPA), Facebook has to send you your data on a CD within 40 days of a request. The organization managed to accidentally get Reddit involved, whose users recently overwhelmed Facebook with data requests by following a slightly altered version of the instructions. Dear Mr. When the Most Personal Secrets Get Outed on Facebook. Facebook e-mail mess: Address books altered; e-mail lost | Internet & Media.

An alarming number of people are reporting that the new e-mail address Facebook forced on users this week is changing their address books while intercepting and losing unknown amounts of e-mail. Facebook users say contacts' e-mail addresses on phones and personal devices have been altered without their consent -- and their e-mail communication is being redirected elsewhere, and lost.

One very angry user is Adobe employee Rachel Luxemburg. On her personal blog she writes, Today, a co-worker discovered that his contact info for me had been silently updated to overwrite my work e-mail address with my Facebook e-mail address. He discovered this only after sending work e-mails to the wrong address. And even worse, the e-mails are not actually in my Facebook messages.

As Luxemburg explains, this disaster is happening despite the fact that, like many others, she rushed to replace the @Facebook e-mail with their correct e-mail address once they'd found out about Facebook's change. On Hacker News: Facebook takedown followup: what happened, and what Facebook needs to fix. Facebook has reinstated a number of sites' Facebook pages that were taken down due to bogus copyright claims this week. The company issued an apology for the inconvenience and says that DMCA notice abuse is an issue that Facebook takes seriously, but serious questions still remain about the effectiveness of Facebook's process for dealing with complaints. "We have invested significant resources into creating a dedicated team that uses specialized tools, systems and technology to review and properly handle intellectual property notices. This system evaluates a number of factors when deciding how to respond and, in many cases, we require the reporter to provide additional information before we can take action.

As a result of these efforts, the vast majority of intellectual property notices that we receive are handled without incident," Facebook spokesperson Brooke Oberwetter told Ars on Thursday evening. "Of course, no system is perfect and we are always striving to improve our practices. Facebook Deletes “We are All Osama Bin Ladin” Page. After reaching more than 10,000 members in few hours in light of his assassination by American forces in Pakistan Facebook deleted we are “ All Osama Bin Ladin” page . We do not know what is the excuse this time for deleting this page, is it call for violence? We did not notice any. And this excuse that any page that calls for violence should be banned is nonsense, because if that was the case, then Obama’s page on Facebook should be banned because it contains calls for violence.

The case here is not whether Obama’s call for violence against US enemies is right or not. So Facebook is implementing double standards when it comes Anything related to Palestine or Islam. You might dislike Osama Bin Ladin, you have that right, we are not defending him, but also people have the right to express themselves and clarify what they believe even if you dislike it. To them USA has committed many crimes against Muslims and non-muslims a like, even before Alqaeda was founded. Share and Enjoy. Facebook cancels China activist’s account over fake identity issue. The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda.

A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world. The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives.

The most interesting bit is the following text: [W]e set up six Facebook profiles to check the impact of sexual-preference: a highly-sensitive personal attribute. Two profiles (male control) are for males interested in females, two (female control) for females interested in males, and one test profile of a male interested in males and one of a female interested in females. The age and location were set to 25 and Washington D.C. respectively.. . .Alarmingly, we found ads where the ad text was completely neutral to sexual preference (e.g. for a nursing degree in a medical college in Florida) that was targeted exclusively to gay men.

Yesterday, Facebook introduced Places, a new location feature that competes with popular services like Foursquare, Google Latitude, Loopt, and Gowalla. Places allows Facebook users to 'check in' to real world locations and to tag their friends as present (similar to how Facebook allows tagging in photos).

Everyone who is checked in to the location can see who else is listed as "Here Now" for a few hours after they check in. Once you are checked in to a location, Places also creates a story in your friends' News Feeds and places a notice in the location's page's Recent Activity section. The product will roll out over the next few days. Like all location products, the new application publishes potentially sensitive information, since a stream of information on location can provide a detailed picture of your life. Some locations might appear cool at one moment, and yet become something you'd rather forget the next. Note that location data can be a tempting target for law enforcement. Five months after it first announced coming privacy changes this past summer, Facebook is finally rolling out a new set of revamped privacy settings for its 350 million users.

The social networking site has rightly been criticized for its confusing privacy settings, most notably in a must-read report by the Canadian Privacy Commissioner issued in July and most recently by a Norwegian consumer protection agency. We're glad to see Facebook is attempting to respond to those privacy criticisms with these changes, which are going live this evening. Unfortunately, several of the claimed privacy "improvements" have created new and serious privacy problems for users of the popular social network service. The new changes are intended to simplify Facebook's notoriously complex privacy settings and, in the words of today's privacy announcement to all Facebook users, "give you more control of your information. " Our conclusion? Not to say that many of the changes aren't good for privacy. No longer. Facebook’s Instant Personalization: An Analysis of Fundamental Privacy Flaws.

Facebook has begun to accelerate the web-wide roll-out of the Instant Personalization program. The number of partner websites recently jumped from three to five, and a partnership with early stage venture firm YCombinator is set to greatly expand that number in the coming months.[1] Instant Personalization allows a partner website to automatically learn the identity of a visitor (as well as some data about them) without any explicit user action, provided that the visitor is a logged-in Facebook user. It is probably the most privacy-intrusive change introduced by the company this year, and could lead to a profound change in how the web works and is perceived.

Facebook’s superficially reassuring line is that only data that is already public is shared with partner sites. 1. 2. How-To Permanently Delete Your Facebook Account. Looking to permanently delete your Facebook account?

Not surprising. Over the years, Facebook has seen its share of controversy in regards to the privacy of its users. It’s hard to say what sparked all the excitement: Rapid growth of its service? Parents growing awareness of the site and how their kids were using it? Whatever the reason, it’s obvious some no longer trust the social giant and I keep hearing the same question over and over again from my readers: “Is it possible to delete my facebook account?” And “I managed to deactivate it so it’s deleted right?” You would think the answer would be fairly straightforward. Personally, I feel Facebook has crossed the line of unethical behavior on this.
