Most schools are definitely creativity killers . Not all of them though . In my area there are a couple interesting new school alternatives . One is a science based program located in the middle of a zoo. Students regularly move around the zoo and forest in their classes . Another is an arts based school in a downtown location that moves from place to place in arts programs like dance , music ,video production etc .. People have been proven to learn mostly by visual input and hands on learning yet most schools don't provide that . For instance math is more easily picked up by cooking and wood shop than by just putting a book in front of someone . It's hard to forget something learned through the hand and eye . And one gets a feeling of accomplishment from making something . Using learned skills . Rather than just jotting down some abstract meaningless equation . by mirlen101 Mar 25

Exploring Natural Materials It's Natural Materials month here on Makezine. So far, we've looked at bone, rope, gemstone, flint napping, cuttlefish casting, and more. You can check out all of these themed posts on the Natural Materials archive page . I'm excited to see that Greg Borenstein has launched Makematics, a blog that covers his own exploration of advanced math topics that are found in new creative applications by and for makers. Tom Buchanan, a retired teacher, emailed to let us know he successfully built Owen Tanner's solar pendulum, as seen in MAKE: Vol. 28, page 146. http://makezine.com/

Laptop Bubble Stand

Everyone is always making laptop stands that, albeit functional, are rather hideous to look at. This becomes less than ideal when you consider that typically, when the laptop is not on the stand, you have to look at it. I wanted to fix this problem by making a laptop stand that was sleek, stylish, inexpensive and kept my laptop cool. With this in mind, I arrived at wicked cool laptop stand that can be made for under $10. The best part is that not only is it cheap, but it's also dead easy to make. http://www.instructables.com/id/Laptop-Bubble-Stand/
