Graphic-ExchanGE - a selection of graphic projects. This new deck by Joe White follow the Contraband one. You know Joe and his amazing detailed design as we work together on the (sold out) 2015 edition of the calendar and he designed the front cover. Every single playing card within the High Victorian deck was designed from scratch - even the Aces, Jokers, and court cards exude the grand excess of ornamentation quintessential to the Victorian era.

In a word: breathtaking. Antler is a deck designed by Tom Lane, who also creates this year edition of the front cover of the letterpress calendar! This Tobacco Brown back design features two Twin Bucks enshrined within beautiful flourishes that mimic the lush forest of Yosemite National Park. The Ace of Spades features a noble Buck with herbaceous ornamentation crowning his dignified antlers, and each Joker offers the Antler name. I contact Jeff Trish as I love his design of this deck, and I am pleased to say he participates in this year edition of the calendar too!

The Best and Worst Identities of 2011, Part II: The Best. To end the year on a positive note here are The Best Identities of 2011. As much as I enjoy posting the train wrecks, the Bests are more fun, mostly because my selections tend to generate plenty of disagreement. You can catch the worst here. Enjoy and see you in 2012. A global insurance company that isn’t afraid to look serious or even mean, with a super sharp and blacker than black logo.

The applications added some levity and a playful animation showed its flexibility. Where hundreds of swoosh-based, humanoid-shaped logos have gone horribly wrong, Atlassian succeeds with a very excellent execution in form, counterforms, and typography. While a lot of commenters moaned that this was the opposite of “seeing clearly” — after all, who wants to think about their vision looking like a smooshed grape — I thought the idea of being able to see even the most delicate detail of the watercolor communicated the right thing. One of the best, and truest, flexible identities of the year. 2009 Professional winners showcase.

The johnson banks thought for the week. The man who gave Michael Johnson his first job, Wally Olins, died yesterday. In this piece Johnson remembers some of Olins’ famous foibles. I first met Wally nearly thirty years ago, when, as a nervous student, I took a train down to London from the soggy shores of the North-West, clutching a box of slides of my final project. I’m not sure how my slightly hapless tutor had managed to swing the already world-famous Olins as my external project examiner but there I was, in the ubiquitous eighties design consultancy reception, perspiring furiously. My precise memories of the next two hours are unclear. Wally’s ability to stir up an almighty kerfuffle was, of course, legendary.

Olins was also famously critical of other speakers on the conference circuit. But the formidable front he presented was tempered by a genuinely good-natured side. For the 70s, think the Hadfields fox or Bovis and that unlikeliest of hummingbirds. But design prizes were never Wally’s thing. OUT THERE.
