"Not explaining science seems to me perverse. When you're in love, you want to tell the world." - Carl Sagan Nothing lasts forever in this Universe, not even the seemingly timeless stars in the sky. At any moment, any one of the brilliant, twinkling points of light from across the galaxy could run out of fuel, ending its life as we know it.Time Perception [Publishers are always concerned about the number of pages in a book, so to pare down an earlier edition of the text, this section was removed. It's now a bit dated, but I'll make an effort to update it when the smoke clears a bit.] Perhaps you have an uneasy feeling as you begin to read about time perception. Color perception, shape perception, and distance perception all refer to tangible attributes.

Humans communicate with one another using a dazzling array of languages, each differing from the next in innumerable ways. Do the languages we speak shape the way we see the world, the way we think, and the way we live our lives? Do people who speak different languages think differently simply because they speak different languages? Does learning new languages change the way you think? Do polyglots think differently when speaking different languages? These questions touch on nearly all of the major controversies in the study of mind.
HOW DOES OUR LANGUAGE SHAPE THE WAY WE THINK? By Lera Boroditsky
The north portal of the 11th century Urnes stave church has been interpreted as containing depictions of snakes and dragons that represent Ragnarök [ 1 ] In Norse mythology , Ragnarök — typically spelled Ragnarǫk in the handwritten scripts — is a series of future events, including a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major figures (including the gods Odin , Thor , Týr , Freyr , Heimdallr , and Loki ), the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the subsequent submersion of the world in water. Afterward, the world will resurface anew and fertile, the surviving and reborn gods will meet, and the world will be repopulated by two human survivors. Ragnarök is an important event in the Norse canon, and has been the subject of scholarly discourse and theory.

The “Droste effect” is when images recursively include themselves. The name comes from Droste brand cocoa powder, which was sold in 1904 in a box that showed a nurse carrying the same box which, in turn, showed the nurse carrying the box, and so on. The simplest form is to use a scale and transform on an image to place an exact copy within it, and then repeat. Take a look at this Demonstration using the original Droste box artwork. But much more interesting results can be achieved when you get complex analysis involved. M.C.

Blind men and an elephant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The story of the blind men and an elephant originated in India from where it is widely diffused. It has been used to illustrate a range of truths and fallacies . At various times it has provided insight into the relativism, opaqueness or inexpressible nature of truth, the behaviour of experts in fields where there is a deficit or inaccessibility of information, the need for communication, and respect for different perspectives. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Construal level theory (CLT) is a theory in social psychology that describes the relation between psychological distance and the extent to which people's thinking (e.g., about objects and events) is abstract or concrete. [ 1 ] . The general idea is that the more distant an object is from the individual the more abstract it will be thought of, while the opposite relation between closeness and concreteness is true as well. In CLT, psychological distance is defined on several dimensions - temporal , spatial , social and hypothetical distance being considered most important [ 2 ] , though there is some debate among social psychologists about further dimensions like informational, experiential or affective distance [ 3 ] .

In addition to Goleman’s lack of sensitivity to the brain-to-mind translation problem, and his failure to acknowledge that we already know much about the mind through its works and constructs, Goleman’s work is often inconsistent and sometimes incoherent. Let us look at some cases. Two Brains Equals Two Minds Because Goleman’s “theory” of mind is based strictly on his interpretations of data from brain research, he comes to some questionable conclusions about the mind. For example, he states, “sensory signals from eye or ear travel first in the brain to the thalamus and then — across a single synapse — to the amygdala; a second signal from the thalamus is routed to the neocortex — the thinking brain. This branching allows the amygdala to begin to respond before the neocortex, which mulls information through several levels of brain circuits before it fully perceives and finally initiates its more finely tailored response (p. 17).”Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation .

Cognitive dissonance is a discomfort caused by holding conflicting cognitions (e.g., ideas , beliefs , values , emotional reactions) simultaneously. In a state of dissonance, people may feel surprise, dread, guilt, anger, or embarrassment. [ 1 ] The theory of cognitive dissonance in social psychology proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance by altering existing cognitions, adding new ones to create a consistent belief system, or alternatively by reducing the importance of any one of the dissonant elements. [ 1 ] An example of this would be the conflict between wanting to smoke and knowing that smoking is unhealthy; a person may try to change their feelings about the odds that they will actually suffer the consequences, or they might add the consonant element that the smoking is worth short term benefits.

The anima and animus , in Carl Jung's school of analytical psychology , are the two primary anthropomorphic archetypes of the unconscious mind , as opposed to both the theriomorphic and inferior-function of the shadow archetypes, as well as the abstract symbol sets that formulate the archetype of the Self. The anima and animus are described by Jung as elements of his theory of the collective unconscious, a domain of the unconscious that transcends the personal psyche. In the unconscious of the male, it finds expression as a feminine inner personality: anima ; equivalently, in the unconscious of the female it is expressed as a masculine inner personality: animus . The anima (animus) can be identified as the totality of the unconscious feminine psychological qualities that a male possesses or the masculine ones possessed by the female.

Kontrapunkt można podzielić na kontrapunkt ścisły ( kanon ) i swobodny (m.in. fuga ).
