Why Didn’t OWS Transform Into a Political Movement? Yves here.
I’ve not weighed in on the second anniversary of the start of the Occupy Wall Street anniversary because, truth be told, the movement has gone so local and has so many different faces that I’m not certain it’s possible to make good generalizations without doing a lot of investigation. This short interview seeks to address one of the expectations for OWS, that it become a political force, and why it was never met. Putting aside a sour note where the interviewee treats the re-election of Obama as a force for change (perhaps, but not the sort an OWS supporter would want), the immediate answer is straighforward: OWS didn’t set out to make demands (recall the frustrated criticism in the media about “Who is their leader? Je me trouvais dans le métro de Washington, en train de lire un article sur les protestataires rassemblés à Zuccotti Park, au cœur de Manhattan. C’était trois ans après la remise à flot de Wall Street ; deux ans après que toutes mes fréquentations eurent abandonné l’espoir de voir le président Barack Obama faire preuve d’audace ; deux mois après que les amis républicains des banquiers eurent conduit le pays au bord du défaut de paiement en engageant un bras de fer budgétaire avec la Maison Blanche. Comme tout le monde, j’en avais assez. Près de moi se tenait un voyageur parfaitement habillé, certainement un cadre supérieur revenant de quelque salon commercial, à en juger par le slogan folâtre imprimé sur le sac qu’il portait en bandoulière.
