http://www.sdss.org/ The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is one of the most ambitious and influential surveys in the history of astronomy. Over eight years of operations (SDSS-I, 2000-2005; SDSS-II, 2005-2008), it obtained deep, multi-color images covering more than a quarter of the sky and created 3-dimensional maps containing more than 930,000 galaxies and more than 120,000 quasars. SDSS data have been released to the scientific community and the general public in annual increments, with the final public data release from SDSS-II occurring in October 2008. That release, Data Release 7 , is available through this website.

time-lapse animations

A few dynamic challenges... Everybody knows that the Universe is dynamic. Even absolute beginners immediately recall the day/night sequence, the ever-changing lunar phases, the year's seasons, etc. The Universe has its own time-scale though. http://www.astrosurf.com/cidadao/animations.htm

stellarium

Stellarium 0.11.2 is a stable version that introduces some new features and closes 47 bug and wishlist reports. A lot of work has been done on making translatable text that wasn't localized before. This includes most of the text used by the default plug-ins, landscapes, countries, script names and descriptions. The Oculars plug-in now has an optional control panel with buttons for those affected by the "missing menu" bug, but it needs to be enabled in the Oculars configuration window. An feature for importing new satellites has been added to the Satellites plug-in, so be sure to reset its settings to get the new data sources. http://www.stellarium.org/

This gap will start to close on February 6, 2011, when the spacecraft achieve 180 degree separation, and will completely close over the next several days. Credit: NASA
